‘Star Wars 1313’ Game, Live-Action TV Show ‘Star Wars: Underworld’ Not Dead Yet

Back at E3 2012 (yes, it’s been that long already), before we even knew that Disney would be purchasing Lucasfilm from George Lucas and new Star Wars movies were officially on the way, a new game was shown off that excited both fans of the movies and fans of video games alike. The game was titled Star Wars 1313, and it looked like a whole lot of fun. Watching the gameplay now isn’t nearly as impressive as it was three years ago before the current-gen consoles arrived, but you can still see the promise it showed for those who can still enjoy a cover-based third-person shooter.

Additionally we’ve been hearing about a possible live-action Star Wars TV series for for many years now, and Lucas is said to have written at least 100 episodes already. The show was described as “Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space,” and there was even reports that it had begun casting and that it would be titled Star Wars: Underworld.

Sadly it looked like these two projects had died, but now the slightest sign of life has appeared for them both.

During a Force Awakens press junket, /Film’s Peter Sciretta was able to chat with Lucasfilm head and producer Kathleen Kennedy. During their chat Underworld, which had first been announced at Star Wars Celebration III in 2005, came up, and surprisingly Kennedy not only revealed that it’s something they’re still looking at, but she also tagged on 1313 as something they haven’t completely abandoned as well.

When asked about the show and if all the scripts Lucas worked on were gone, Kennedy responded:

“No. No, interestingly enough, that’s an area we’ve spent a lot of time, reading through the material that he developed is something we very much would like to explore. And there was 1313 the game, where there was”¦”

Sciretta cut in here with “The concept art for that looked amazing!” before Kennedy continued:

“Unbelievable. So our attitude is, we don’t want to throw any of that stuff away. It’s gold. And it’s something we’re spending a lot of time looking at, pouring through, discussing, and we may very well develop those things further. We definitely want to.”

So neither is officially breathing again yet. Perhaps the best way to describe them currently is mostly dead…but still slightly alive.

Unfortunately if 1313 were to live again, EA has the exclusive rights to develop all Star Wars games. And if their first release, the recently released Star Wars: Battlefront, is any indication, the future might be depressingly dark.

Don’t get me wrong—Battlefront looks, sounds, feels absolutely incredible. Exactly like you’d want a Star Wars game to. But it’s an incomplete game, lacking a single-player campaign yet still being slapped with the full $60 price tag, and also excluding plenty of content to sell to suckers later for even more money just to make it all really sting. It’s a common practice in gaming today and people are sick of it, and I and many others are more than willing to wait as long as necessary to get it for a much more acceptable price or even skip it entirely if need be.

Whether every Star Wars game pulls the same crap or not, time will tell. Amy Hennig, who wrote and directed the massively successful Uncharted series for Naughty Dog, left that company last year to join Dead Space developer Visceral Games to work on another Star Wars game for EA. No details are known about the game yet, and a title like 1313 seems like it would be right up Hennig’s alley, but there are high hopes for it despite knowing nothing about it yet.

Do you want to see Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: Underworld become a reality, or are you okay with them sitting on a shelf?
