Cate Blanchett To Join Marvel Universe In ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

After being nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Carol earlier today, Cate Blanchett looks to be jumping from the awards contenders and into another big franchise. It’s being reported that Blanchett has entered into negotiations to star in the third movie in Marvel’s Thor series, Thor: Ragnarok.

Which character Blanchett would be taking on in her first superhero/comic book movie role if a deal gets worked out is not yet known, only that it will be one of the new female leads. It’s also not yet known if the role would be specifically for Ragnarok or if it’s a character that will branch out into future Marvel movies such as the two-part Avengers: Infinity War.

While she is best known as one of the great actresses working today—often nominated for the various awards for her performances, including five Academy Award nominations (likely soon to be six) since 2009 that resulted in her taking home two Oscar statuettes for Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator and Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine a couple of years back—Blanchett still does a big Hollywood blockbuster or franchise from time to time. Most notably she starred as Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies.

Blanchett would join star Chris Hemsworth, who plays the title role of Thor; Tom Hiddleston, who plays his fan-favorite brother Loki; and Mark Ruffalo, whose Hulk character is paying a visit to the Thor universe for this installment.

The movie is set to be directed by Taika Waititi, whose previous credits include writing, directing, and starring in Eagle vs Shark, Flight of the Conchords, and the recent horror comedy What We Do in the Shadows. The script for the movie was recently polished by Stephany Folsom.

Waititi’s comedic background will be useful, as Hemsworth has said he hopes the new movie will be as funny as Guardians of the Galaxy was.

Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to be released on November 3, 2017.
