The midseason finale of The Vampire Diaries helped move the plot closer to this “three years from now” world we keep getting glimpses of, and continued to explore the common TVD themes of kindness, family, revenge, and betrayal.

Spoilers ahead.

In Chicago three years from now, we see Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) together as a couple. At the beginning of the season, this idea would have seemed crazy, but the story has brought the two closer and closer together, and this couplet is very believable. Stefan declares that he must go save Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Caroline (Candice Accola King) because they are both people he cares about, and that Valerie can’t come because he won’t add a third to the list of people he loves that are missing.

Meanwhile, Caroline and Stefan have been growing gradually apart over the season. We rarely see them together and they are usually shown speaking on the phone just to check in, almost like old friends or acquaintances. Caroline and Alaric (Matthew Davis), however, are being drawn together through her pregnancy with his and Jo’s (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) Gemini twins. They attend a prenatal class together, even though she has just told Stefan not to go because it will be “boring.” Interestingly, when Caroline begins to freak out afterwards about whether or not she’s doing things right (can a vampire drink blood while pregnant? There is no precedent), Alaric tries to comfort her and puts his hands on her shoulders before she shoves him up against the wall. Is it just the hormones and vamp strength, or if she is avoiding that personal connection with Alaric? I can’t help feeling that all of these storylines are too predictable. Why show us the future and then proceed to guide us obviously to that very same future? I’m glad there is still a little bit of mystery about how things happen in the future, but overall, I find myself just thinking, “Yup,” when I see things like Alaric and Caroline getting closer. Regardless, I actually do like them as a couple.

The “she” who is responsible for all of the bad happenings who has been regularly mentioned in the future is now most definitively not Lily (Annie Wersching), as she is laid to rest in this episode. I’m pretty sure even the body they used in the coffin is not the same actress. Guess they couldn’t get her to stay for that one last scene! Damon and Stefan are the pallbearers and Nora (Scarlett Byrne) and Valerie are in attendance. Lily’s “daughters” say their emotional goodbyes and Stefan gives Damon a chance to do so, noting, “How many times do you get a second chance to deliver your mother’s eulogy?” Damon looks down and says somberly, “You were a terrible mother when you were alive and you were a terrible mother when you were dead.” He cracks me up. I know Lily redeemed herself in some ways, but I think we have to remember what she did to Elena (Nina Dobrev). It was pretty selfish and evil. Stefan, the good son, closes the scene by saying to Lily, “I’m so sorry. I’ll make this right.”

Thus begins the Salvatore brother adventure, with Stefan hell-bent on avenging his child and now his mother by killing Julian (Todd Lasance) and Damon just wanting to drink. The two argue pretty much the whole episode and I can see both of their points. It’s a complicated situation and the two of them have just decided to handle it differently. As they visit one of Julian’s old hometowns, Sunbury, they happen upon a bar where the entire crowd has been fed upon. They assume this sloppy and gruesome display is Julian, and they are right, as he arrives minutes later. Julian is drunk and blabbers about how Lily meant everything to him. Her sons have a hard time believing this, but I think in his own way, he’s telling the truth. Back at the college, Bonnie (Kat Graham) helps with a toy drive to benefit children and a bored/lonely Nora offers to help. Bonnie is hesitant at first, but agrees, mainly to get information from her for Damon. When Nora spills that Julian still has many friends at home, Bonnie texts Damon and Stefan, but it’s too late. After revealing a fancy sword that will trap any vampire’s soul in a hell dimension, Julian is surround by friends at the bar in Sunbury and a brawl takes commences. Thankfully, Damon finds a way of causing a mini-explosion and he and Stefan hightail it out of there.

Stefan and Damon break up their revenge party because Damon no longer wants any part in it. Stefan is so desperate to get at Julian that he enlists Valerie to help him kidnap Mary Louise (Teressa Liane). Earlier in the episode, Mary Louise and Nora do have a brief conversation, but Mary Louise still sides with Julian and thinks that Valerie is lying about ever being pregnant with Stefan’s child. She’s becoming pretty hateable in this scenario, not acknowledging another woman’s (and her sister’s, no less) suffering. They are not on the same page and Nora declares that it’s over. Later, when Julian sees a photo of Nora knocked out, he returns to the Salvatore house. Damon has no clue what is going on, but Julian assumes he is involved and starts beating him up. Simultaneously, Nora is back at the dorm with Bonnie and after a bonding conversation, she sees the photo, assumes Bonnie is involved, and knocks her out (I don’t think? she’s dead). In a dark turn of events back at the Salvatore house, Julian stabs Damon with the sword just in time for Caroline to show up. As she tries to comfort Stefan and say they will get Damon back, Julian stabs Stefan with the sword as well.

With the two Salvatore brothers entering a hell which makes them relive every bad thing they have ever done, we can safely assume they will return for the latter half of the season. But the question is, how will they return and in what condition? Dark days ahead, friends.
