‘Star Trek Beyond’ Trailer: I’m Tellin’ Y’all, It’s Sabotage
  |  @   |

Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for Justin Lin‘s (Fast and Furious 6) Star Trek Beyond starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin. Newcomers include the talents of Joe Taslim (The Raid, Fast and Furious 6), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service and the upcoming Mummy reboot), and Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, Beasts of No Nation).

While the actual trailer was scheduled for a theatrical debut this Friday alongside showings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, fans of the franchise have a head start and don’t have to worry about waiting until Friday. Check out the first trailer for the film below.

Written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, the first teaser doesn’t offer much in terms of plot, but based on previous reports the film is said to be based on the “five-year mission” that the original series was known for. There are rumors that Idris Elba could be playing a Klingon, and since they haven’t been seen in any way that would make a significant impact on the franchise reboot. Beyond would be the perfect time for the alien race to cause some problems to the crew of the Enterprise, who seem to be in a bit of trouble. Although Pegg has spoken openly about how Elba won’t be playing a Klingon – or maybe he is just taking a page out of J.J. Abrams’ mystery box playbook.

The trailer is pretty action packed with bits of humor sprinkled throughout. Notice when surrounded by enemies, Bones not surprised that he wasn’t beamed up after he said “At least, I won’t die alone.”

Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” pretty much sets the tone for Justin Lin’s latest film, which is a fun and electric film. The director who has stepped away from the Fast and Furious franchise after directing four of the seven films, said the film would tap into something that Abrams’ films didn’t touch on: the five-year mission.

We see that the crew of the Enterprise has been separated after their ship was attacked. While the reunion is inevitable, there seems to be something bigger going on that the trailer isn’t ready to reveal quite yet. Which is fine as it will only leave fans even more intrigued. But the aforementioned action looks to be intense, and fits into the fun summer blockbuster mold.

It should be interesting to see what sorts of changes we will see in the film now that Damon Lindelof, Roberto Orci, and Alex Kurtzman are no longer writing the script. Although Orci is seen receiving a screenplay credit towards the end of the trailer.

Star Trek Beyond opens in theaters on July 22, 2016.
