The fall finale of The Last Man On Earth aired Sunday night, and it was the best episode yet. All of the goofs and gags that we love about the show, mixed with heartwarming and heartwrenching moments, equaled a fantastic time. The episode ended on such a crazy note, and there are endless possibilities when it returns closer to spring.

Spoilers below.

Phil’s (Boris Kodjoe) stomachache is finally diagnosed in between some glasses of wine, questions, and a medical book…

It’s appendicitis. And that means death unless it is removed. Gail (Mary Steenburgen) knows she can’t do it. She’s just a 3-star chef, and thinks they should send him off with a bunch of pills. I don’t blame her. I would suggest the exact same thing. Sad, pregnant Erica (Cleopatra Coleman) convinces her, so off she goes to cut into pies for practice.

Todd and Melissa (January Jones) talk. Melissa didn’t hear Todd say no to her proposal during the crisis, so they had an awkward, yet friendly talk. Later Melissa cried to Carol (Kristen Schaal), who postponed the “delicious feelings.”

Todd (Mel Rodriguez) used to be in a dance group called The Body Lockers. His demo might have been the best thing ever. We (and Tandy) found this out while they were cadaver hunting at the morgue. The cadavers were all bones (expected), so they dug up Gordon. There Todd confesses to Tandy about him and Gail. Surprisingly, Tandy gets back to the task on hand – the task being dragging Gail’s dead ex-lover to the house, so she can practice surgery on his corpse. That ended up not happening, thank goodness!

The surgery starts to happen, and we all knew what was going to happen…

Flatline. Goodbye, handsome.

Out in space, Mike Miller (Jason Sudeikis) realized that there was a new baby worm, and made his way back to the space station. His new friend dubbed Phil, gives him the courage to kamikaze back to Earth. It looks like Mike may be joining Phil (handsome appendicitis Phil, that is).

Nice juxtaposition between the surgery and the plummeting to Earth scenes.

I absolutely love the role Tandy has in the group now. He’s still super stupid, walks in at the wrong times, says the wrong thing every second, but shows that he cares. The group, in turn, tolerate him at an annoying little brother level, which is great.

And holy cow! That was the darkest cliffhanger a comedy has ever seen! It looks like two people are about to die, and I don’t want either to.

No exact date on when The Last Man On Earth returns, but it will probably be back close to spring.
