Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams

It goes without saying that if you haven’t seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this report will have some major SPOILERS, so if you haven’t seen the film then, then I suggest you turn back now before this report ruins it for you.

Much like the film’s marketing, a lot of our reviews were spoiler-free so that everyone who didn’t get early screenings can experience the same joy of watching the film. But now, the cast and crew of the new film have been making more interview rounds where they reveal some behind-the-scenes information, as well as try to answer some questions that viewers have had since watching The Force Awakens.

One character in particular was actually supposed to meet a completely different fate. Check out those details here below.

Again…. SPOILERS….

In an interview with GQ Magazine, star Oscar Isaac revealed that Poe Dameron was actually suppose to die in The Force Awakens. During the interview, Isaac talked about some of the early conversations that he had with director and co-screenwriter J.J. Abrams about Poe, and how the big reveal came as a shock.

“He’s amazing!” said Abrams. “Sounds good!” thought Isaac, whose first experience in a movie theater had been seeing The Empire Strikes Back. “He opens the whole movie!” said Abrams. “Sounds great!” thought Isaac. “And then,” Abrams went on. “He dies.” “Oh,” thought Isaac.

The news, of course, came as a disappointment to the actor. But Isaac eventually warmed up to the idea of his character dying.

“I went back home [to New York], and I thought about it,” Isaac said. “Then I wrote [Abrams] and said, “˜Okay. I’ll do it!’ I figured it would be a cameo: I’ll come in, do my thing, and maybe it’s actually better not to have to sign myself up for three movies.”

The actor wasn’t too keen about playing a character that sets up the story only to die early on, much like the character he played in The Bourne Legacy.

But then through the miracle of screenwriting changes, Abrams then revealed to the actor that Poe doesn’t die.

“Never mind. I’ve figured it out,” the director said. “You’re in the whole movie now.”

An excited Isaac almost couldn’t believe it. But Poe isn’t in the film as much to begin with, although the chemistry between him and Finn is one of the best things about the movie, as their banter provided some nice levity and highlighted the themes of friendship. Of course now that Poe is alive, it leaves room for his character to develop even more in the Rian Johnson-directed Star Wars: Episode VIII.
