Netflix kicked off their quadruple Marvel series with Daredevil, which was then followed by Jessica Jones. Luke Cage and Iron First are the subsequent series that comes next, followed by the ensemble Defenders series. Like most series that have a second season it will feature new stories and new characters. One of these new characters will be the fan-favorite Punisher who is known for dealing out his own brand of justice and has a heavy arsenal.
Jon Bernthal will play The Punisher, much to the delight fans of Daredevil and the comic book character. Though we haven’t seen much of him – except through leaked set photos – it was only a matter of time before we got to see him. And now that time as come as the first set of official images have been released. Check out what kind of punishment the Punisher is dealing out on Daredevil, plus a couple of more photos below.
According to Entertainment Weekly, who debuted the images, Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez won’t replicate what was done in season one of Daredevil in terms of character reveals. In the first season it was to build the Kingpin’s sinister motivations, but the two will introduce the Punisher very quickly with an opening action scene. Petrie spoke on this, saying:
“The advantage of any sequel is you can dive right in. We hit the ground running and then we ran as fast as we f””ing could.”
While Daredevil and The Punisher believe in justice, both have very different ways to delivering it. For Daredevil, he believes in physically beating down criminals until they give up. However, The Punisher believes in using his heavy artillery to make criminals get the point.
However, Petrie acknowledges the difficulties of bringing the gun wielding anti-hero to life, especially in a time were shootings are almost a monthly headline:
“Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky s–t. We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now. If you’ve got a gun and you’re not the police you’re going to incite strong feelings. We’re stirring the pot and we’re aware of the headlines where we live and we’re trying to get people to think.”
But one thing that Bernthal is worried about is that he will be unable to live up to fan expectations:
“People have been coming up to me on the streets of New York saying, “˜Do not mess this up.’ This character has resonated with law enforcement and military. He’s brought the war home with him in the worst possible way. And the best thing about him is that if he offends you, he just doesn’t care.”
There is still no word on when season two of Daredevil will be released, but just know that EW has already seen two episodes, just in time for the Winter TCAs. We’ll keep you posted on new developments as soon as they come in.
