Joss Whedon On Why He Is No Longer Working On Marvel Films

During the press junket for Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age Of Ultron, director Joss Whedon had spoken about some of the difficulties he encountered during the production of the sequel. Despite some of these creativedifferences, Whedon still made it out with a semi-entertaining film, though many would agree that the Avengers sequel didn’t meet expectations, and falls short of being just as great as its predecessor. While Whedon was still able to offer us two exciting ensemble films, he is no longer obligated to work on anything Marvel-related – he had signed a contract to be a creative contributor for Phase 2.
Now that Whedon is done with superheroes, he talking about his experience working with Marvel Studios, and speaking out on why he is no longer working for them. Check out his comments below.
In a Q&A over at ComicBook.com, Whedon talked about how overtaxed he was working on Avengers and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for the last five years, and the importance of challenging himself to do new things before he starts to repeat himself:
I’ve gone off the reservation for a while. It was five years that I was working on either Avengers or S.H.I.E.L.D”¦.That was an enormous gift they gave me; they handed me several hundreds of millions of dollars and said ‘do what you do,’ which is very rare and I was very lucky. At the same time, it’s important for me not just to have my own thing and do something smaller, but also to create a new challenge for myself because I will start to repeat myself.
No one said taking a huge ensemble project like The Avengers was going to be easy. Despite its flaws, Avengers is a fantastic film with great chemistry, humor, and action sequences. Of course, Age Of Ultron suffered because it was overstuffed, and tried to accomplish too much. That being said, Whedon is still very gracious for what Marvel has given him. In fact, he was able to do a small adaptation of Much A Do About Nothing in between.
He then revealed why he is no longer involved with Marvel (via Uproxx):
“No. You know I was their sort of consigliere for a while”¦ We do not discuss our thing”¦ [audience laughter] But, I sort of had my finger in all of the films in the second phase, but then I just had to concentrate only on Ultron, and sort of know when it was done I was just going to stop. So I made a completely clean break, not because we had a falling out, just because I was like, “˜I can’t.’ If I was still there going, “˜Well, here are my thoughts on this film,’ I’d be there every day. I wouldn’t do anything else because there are a lot of films, and it is a lot of fun. It’s very seductive. When you can put your little fairy dust on things and just improve them slightly, and they actually listen to you.”
While it sounds like there is no love lost between the two, and that Whedon wants to do new things before heading back to a major superhero franchise. We all remember that he attempted to bring Wonder Woman to the big screen once before he jumped into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
