‘Transformers 5’: Michael Bay Promises This One Will Be His Last
  |  @   |

We’ve heard many directors say that the latest installment of a feature franchise will be their last, and often times it’s not. The only possible way that could happen is if said director is already moving on with a new project or the franchise has already signed a different director. So in the case of Transformers 5, Michael Bay was indecisive on whether or not to direct the next feature. We all know what Paramount has done to secure that Transformers stays with them by hiring a number of writers to pen spinoffs, sequels, and prequels. And while most of those features are now confirmed, the studio was adamant on bringing back Bay for one more Transformers film.

And now it looks like he is obliging them. A new report says he will direct Transformers 5. More on the story below.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the director of the past four Transformers films says that the fifth movie will be his last directing effort in the franchise:

“Transformers, I still have a great time. It’s fun to do a movie that 100 million people will see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone else.”

I remind Bay that he said the same thing before each of the last two Transformers movies. “I know,” he says. “J.J. [Abrams] told me, “˜You’re the only guy that could do this.’ But it’s time to move on. One more.”

It’s not clear why Bay is coming back to direct Transformers for a fifth time. It’s not as if there is any stories left to tell, if you could argue that the films had any stories to begin with. Most of these movies have been just unidentifiable robots battling it out in a major metropolitan city, while humans mettle in the fight.

That being said, fans don’t really seem to care, as these films keep breaking box office records. So, if it ain’t broke, well you know.

The key is that Transformers 5 will give way to those aforementioned spinoffs, sequels, and prequels. And even though the previous four didn’t really have a connective thread, the fifth Transformers will act as a bridge to the connective universe. When we last left the Autobots, Optimus Prime had launched himself into space to find out about the Creators, and why they hired Lockdown to bring him back and their plans for Earth.

Whether or not Bay will follow up on this is not clear. It’s not as if it matters anyway since story is not the reason why the fans keep coming back for more. As long as the Autobots and Decepticons keep mashing each other into gigantic metal slabs, and the explosions keep getting bigger and bigger, they will come.
