The Conjuring 2

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. have released the first trailer to James Wan‘s The Conjuring 2, the sequel to the director’s 2013 hit. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return to reprise their roles as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Check out the first trailer plus a couple of images for The Conjuring 2 here below.

The Conjuring helped set off at least one spinoff that centered on their various collections of possessed items, like the Annabelle doll. While we haven’t seen another spinoff since then, The Conjuring 2 may help revitalize an interest into what other haunted trinkets the Warrens may have safely stored away. The Warren’s cases have helped inspire classic horror films such as The Haunting in Connecticut and The Amityville Horror.

But this new case won’t be looking into those inspirations. Instead, it will take a look at a different case, one involving a single mother and her four children who seem to be tormented by evil spirits.

Production on The Conjuring 2 began in Summer 2015, shortly after Wan finished his press tour duties for Furious 7. He wrote the script with Carey Hayes and Chad Hayes. David Leslie Johnson provided additional rewrites. The film was actually put into development before the first Conjuring could be released, followed by a series of positive reviews from test screenings and runs at film festivals like the LA Film Festival. It also grossed over $318 million worldwide.

I remember watching The Conjuring for the first time with a regular audience during the LAFF, and it was quite an experience. Wan’s decision to build fear using old-school scare tactics and practical effects was what made the film so enjoyable – if you could call a film that makes you cringe and cover your eyes enjoyable.

By the looks of things, The Conjuring 2 seems to use the same formula. A slow, almost quiet build to that inevitable scream that will fill the theater.

Since this is a new case, the upcoming sequel obviously has new characters: Frances O’Connor (The Missing, A.I.) stars as Peggy Hodgson, the single mom; Madison Wolfe (Joy, Trumbo) and newcomers Lauren Esposito, Patrick McAuley and Benjamin Haigh will play the Hodgson children; Maria Doyle Kennedy (Orphan Black, Downton Abbey); Simon Delaney (Begin Again, Delivery Man); Franka Potente (The Bridge, American Horror Story: Asylum); and Simon McBurney (Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation, The Theory Of Everything) also star.

The Conjuring 2 in theaters June 10, 2016.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

The supernatural thriller brings to the screen another real case from the files of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. Reprising their roles, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who, in one of their most terrifying paranormal investigations, travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits. The Conjuring 2 in theaters June 10, 2016.
