Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight

If anything, 2015 was a big year for M. Night Shyamalan. It was the year that he came out with The Visit film and the Wayward Pines television series, both of which were a return to form for the writer-director. And now it looks like he will help curate a new series of frights with the TNT network.

A new report confirms that Shyamalan, known for feature films with a twist like The Sixth Sense and The Village, will be partnering up with TNT for a new version of HBO’s former late-night anthology series, Tales From The Crypt.

More on this story below.

According to Variety, the series will be part of a new two-hour horror block for the network that will feature both long- and short-form storytelling.

For those who may not be familiar with the original series, Tales From The Crypt was HBO’s version of The Twilight Zone, and featured a decaying crypt keeper narrating a series of stories, most of which were based on content that originated from the comic book of the same name. The first notable iteration aired on HBO, and as such, it wasn’t restricted by FCC guidelines and was able to express itself freely by using explicate amounts of profanity, gore, nudity, and sexual situations. The televised series eventually went to syndication on network television, where the adult content was toned down. There was even a kid friendly animated version at one point in time.

Here’s what Shyamalan had to say about his new gig,

“To be part of such a beloved brand like “˜Tales from the Crypt,’ something I grew up watching, and to also have the chance to push the boundaries of genre television as a whole, is an inspiring opportunity that I can’t wait to dive into.”

TBS/TNT executive Kevin Reilly confirmed that they will use stories from the comics, but also an online experiment which would give the audience the opportunity to participate. How exactly is unclear, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted as developments arise.

Now that Shyamalan has got his groove back, it should be interesting to see if he can keep up that momentum. The report makes no mention if audiences would see the return of Crypt Keeper, voiced by John Kassir. Fans would most recognize the puppet character popping out of his coffin after being taken through a tracking shot tour of a decrepit mansion. That cackling laugh along with the pun-filled intros are just a few of the things the character is known for. So let’s just hope that that element is kept in there.

Shymalan’s Binding Edge Pictures partner, Ashwin Rajan, will also produce. Endgame Entertainment’s James D. Stern is executive-producing, along with Aloris Entertainment’s John Santilli and Dan McKinnon.

The series is expected to debut this Fall.
