Avengers: Infinity War Title Card

Anthony and Joe Russo were responsible for giving the Captain America film franchise an exciting new twist by adding a political thriller element to the films. They will continue that in Captain America: Civil War, a film that will see world governments coming together to form an accord to hold the Avengers responsible for their actions and to determine when to call the superhero team if governments need them. So far, the Russos’ MCU films have been earthbound, but they will expand that as they add a cosmic and fantastical element to the two-part Avengers: Infinity War.

It’s not exactly clear if we will see the Guardians of the Galaxy in either or both of the Infinity War films — after all there we have to figure out how Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, and The Inhumans fit into all of this — but as its title suggests, the Avengers will be a part of it. Still, fans are eager to see if every single character from the MCU will be in the two-part film.

And now, the Russos are talking a little bit about that. In a recent interview, the sibling filmmakers revealed that fans will not be disappointed in the number of characters who’ll appear in the movie, and because of its concept, it would have to require heroes from the MCU to unite to defeat Thanos. More on the story below.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, the Russos had this to say about which characters we would see in Infinity War:

“We will say this: People will not be disappointed in the amount of characters in the movie. The concept of Infinity War is that the Marvel universe unites to battle the greatest threat to the world and universe that you’ve ever seen, and we’re going to honor that concept.”

“We’re just going to approach the cosmic side with the same fervor that we did the earthbound work we’ve been doing. We also are going to work really hard to bring a psychological realism. We obviously can’t bring a naturalism to it because it doesn’t really exist outside of science fiction, but we can bring that psychological realism to it, to the characters, and that’s going to be our focus.

Infinity War would be the first time that the Russos would not be restricted to Earth. While that may allow them to explore new possibilities, they say that they would like to apply the same rules from the Captain America films into the Infinity War films.

“Also, it’s going to be our focus to explore the cosmic side, applying the same rules that we like to apply to the last two films that we’ve done. It ends up being the rules of physics always apply or apply as much as we can get them to apply based on what we’re doing.”

Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 opens in theaters on May 4, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 is slated for release a year later, on May 3, 2019.

  1. James Gunn has mentioned that the Guardians of the Galaxy will only have a small role in Part One, which is understandable as its going to be filming only a few months after Guardians 2 wraps up. From what’s been said the Avengers will be the focus, so it wouldn’t surprise me if we find other characters are in a similar situation (Spider-Man will be in the same position filming schedule wise as the Guardians are for example).
