My funny little heart of a show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, took a week off after moving to a new night. I almost thought I lost it somewhere. Hopefully, it will move back to Sunday nights after football season. Last episode, Boyle’s (Joe Lo Truglio) ex took his sperm hostage leading to tons of jokes that wrote themselves. Jake saved the day for his best friend, and that was sweet amidst the gross sperm jokes.
Spoilers below.
The first aside plot is Boyle’s humping dog died and Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) is having a hard time understanding the grief.
A Boyle-ism: “Real men dont cry for more than 3 days”
But awwww!!! Rosa buys Boyle a puppy so he will get over it, but becomes so attached. “I will kill everyone in this room and then myself.” So she gives a little funeral for Boyle’s dog, Jason.
The second aside is Terry (Terry Crews) going overboard on the “acting captain” thing, with a giant to do list. Gina (Chelsea Peretti) is his funny sidekick (with a little crush).
The reason Terry even has to be “acting captain” is all Jake’s fault.
Jake (Andy Samberg) and the gang (but mostly Jake) want to distract Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) from loneliness, while Kevin is in Paris. So he gives him a cold case to look at. That cold case gives them both the mumps.
Here’s where the episode shines. I know I am usually all about Gina, but Holt is hilarious too, especially when he acts out of his robotic deadpan character (which is always fabulous too). They get quarantined and name their giant jaw mumps.
Jake: “His name is Simon and I hate him.”
Holt: “This is Balthazar. He’s an evil demon that spits fire.” Hysterical!
Here’s some more treasure:
Holt: “Forks are very weird. I’ve always thought so.”
Jake: “The mumps have reached my testicles.”
Holt is literally working himself to death. They have a comical fight, calling each other “Pea Hogs.” After 9 days in quarantine, they have had enough of each other. But we haven’t! Oh yeah. They of course solve the cold case anyway.
Gina line of the day: “Yet here I stand… a miracle of movement.” As she dances.
Very lovey-dovey episode. Gave me the feels. You can tell this group really cares for one another, as actors and characters.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs Tuesday nights at 9:00pm ET on FOX.
