Fox Orders Pilot For ‘The Exorcist’ TV Show

Another familiar title could be on the way to becoming a new TV series. Fox has ordered a pilot for a series based on The Exorcist, the story of a pair of priests attempting to help a young girl dealing with a demonic possession.

The pilot for the potential series won’t be based on the 1973 classic movie of the same name, which won two Academy Awards for best writing and best sound, and was nominated for eight more. Instead, it will be a new and modern adaptation of the original 1971 book the movie was based on written by author William Peter Blatty.

In addition to ordering the pilot episode for this potential series, Jeremy Slater has been hired to write the screenplay. Slater previously worked on the horror flick The Lazarus Project and the superhero reboot Fantastic Four.

This new take on The Exorcist is described as a “modern reinvention,” a psychological thriller following two very different men battling the demonic possession of this young girl.

If this does in fact end up getting a full series order from Fox, it will be interesting to see how they plan to expand the story. The premise is pretty straight forward, and also contained. Sure, they could go buddy priest with it, having two vastly different men of the cloth traveling around and dealing with various possessions, but that sounds like it could become repetitive pretty quickly if they’re not careful.

Fox recently attempted to turn another title best known for its movie form, Minority Report, which was a sequel adaptation of the Steven Spielberg movie of the same name (which was itself an adaptation of the Phillip K. Dick short story “The Minority Report”), into a TV series. While the show seemed like a concept that could translate really well to TV and does have a fan following, it hasn’t done huge numbers and its future is unclear at the moment.
