DeLorean: ‘Back To The Future’ Car Back In Production Over 30 Years Later

DeLorean

It’s been over 30 years since the last new DeLorean was built. Now it looks like the car that was made famous by the Back to the Future movies is heading back into production soon.

The company went bankrupt due to a combination of lack of demand and owner John DeLorean being arrested for conspiring to smuggle millions of dollars worth of cocaine (a charge he was later acquitted of) into the United States. Businessman Stephen Wynne eventually purchased the company and moved it to Humble, Texas in 1987, where they’ve been restoring the cars for those who already own them or refurbishing them for sale to those who want to purchase one. Now it appears the laws that were preventing them from manufacturing brand new DeLoreans are being changed.

This all comes thanks to a new bill called the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act of 2015, which basically gives companies that manufacture a limited number of specialty vehicles per year the greenlight to make and sell new cars without facing the complications and restrictions they once did, so long as they meet certain safety regulations such as using an engine from a major manufacturer.

If you’re worried that them building new DeLoreans means that the look of the iconic vehicle will change, worry not. While the engine and so on will be new, the current plan is not to alter the appearance of the car. Instead, they will be building replicas of that 1982 model that’s so familiar to so many people.

With the supplies they currently have in stock, Wynne thinks they will be able to produce around 300 new cars. And instead of building one per month like they have been, he hopes they can now pull off one per week. The goal is to have the first new DeLorean ready by early 2017.

But if you think this means you’ll finally be able to make that geek fantasy a reality by owning your very own Back to the Future car for an affordable price, I’m afraid the news is not good. At the moment, the hope is to sell the new models for under $100,000, but the final price tag will depend largely on which modern engine is chosen to put in it. You can still buy yourself a refurbished model for $45,000 to $50,000.
