Last week the new CW series, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow premiered, and it was a fun ride all the way. Time traveler Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) collected an assortment of good guys and bad guys from Star and Central City, to take down immortal crazyman, Vandal Savage (Casper Crump), in the past to prevent a catastrophic future. The Atom (Brandon Routh), White Canary (Caity Lotz), Firestorm (Franz Drameh and Victor Garber), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), Hawkman (Falk Hentschel), and Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee) join him and go back to the 70s. While most of the crew is in search for who turns out to be the son of the Hawks (past incarnations of course – he’s way older than them), Cold, Canary, and Heat get into a really fun bar fight.
Spoilers below.
Legends of Tomorrow 1.2 “Pilot, Part 2” review: Tonight’s episode found them in Norway in 1975. The Hawk’s now deceased son had a clue as to where Savage might be. There is a large meeting of terrorists looking to buy arms. Stein brashly gets them in.
Heat Wave to Stein: “You’re a special kind of crazy.”
But Savage is a seller, not a buyer. And Damian Darhk (Neal McDonough) is at this meeting. I’m interested! He looks exactly the same age, even though it’s 40 years ago. Magic!
Captain Cold: “We’re just gonna get our nuclear warhead and be on our way.”
Of course there is a huge battle around the nuclear weapons, and a piece of Ray’s suit is left behind. What does this mean? Hunter (really Gideon) shows them a burning Central City in 2016. If they don’t fix it, that future will stick.
Professor Stein takes Jax and Sara to meet his 25-year old self to find out about alpha particles. They can track Ray’s suit piece with it. Sara flirts with younger Stein, and that makes Old Stein uncomfortable. Jax loves it. So does Sara. So do I.
Sara: “Aw… you think I’m s…”
Stein: “Do not finish that sentence.”
They knock out young Stein out and use the tracker to locate the tech.
Stein’s wedding ring starts disappearing. Great Scott Marty! HeHe… Marty. Young Marty shows up at the ship, mesmerized. I hope he makes it back to the mixer to meet his future wife.
Jax to Older Stein: “You need to calm down and stop yelling at yourself.”
Jax is growing on me. He was quite sensible this episode and not so complain-y.
They need to steal the knife. Luckily they have a pair of thieves. Oh, and Ray tags along too.
The Hawks have a heart to heart (basically Hawkman is coming on too strong). With that out of the way, they figure out how to read the knife.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch… Ray, Snart, and Heatwave break into the place, but Ray bumbles everything up. Two-thirds of them get locked in a cage and the other third runs into the owner – Vandal Savage.
Party at Vandal’s house!
Whoa… unexpected death at the end. And another member of the team barely makes it out alive.
This sadness and all the setbacks only make the team stronger. And Rip Hunter fixes Stein’s love life.
The 2nd part of the pilot didn’t make me as giddy as the first, but I love the time paradox. There was slightly too much, “Oops, I made a time mistake,” which I hope isn’t always the case.
That being said, the fight scenes are quick and visually sparkling.
Last week I thought Captain Cold was the episode VIP. This week it was Sara Lance, that little minx!
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airs Thursday nights at 8:00pm ET on The CW.
