On the last episode of The Magicians, we were introduced to Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy. They recruit some potentials to take a test, and Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) gets in, but his best friend Julia (Stella Maeve) does not. She cuts herself so she won’t forget, but now the knowledge is destroying her. She gets magically almost sexually assaulted by another magician who lets her know that Brakebills is not the only choice out there. In the meantime, Quentin meets a few new friends, some nice and others with whom he summons a deadly Moth Beast demon. Said demon attacks a class.

Spoilers below.

The Magicians 1.2 “The Source of Magic” review: Quentin was interviewed at this “crime scene” but he is in shock. They all get questioned incessantly, and Penny (Arjun Gupta) tries to run away. Kady (Jade Tailor) is having none of that, and convinces him to stay and steal stuff. Stuff that turns out to be really important. We see how the moth monster was really defeated. It was Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) who really banished it, but now it looks like they will all be in trouble. Wait… nope. Penny said it was all Quentin. He is expelled, to be wiped on the morning.

Eliot is turning into my favorite character. He is kind taking Quentin under his wing, yet keeps his snark, which is fun. He confesses his deathly intro to magic. “Because by then I started eating at a professional level.” And gives Quentin some wisdom. “Magic doesn’t come from talent. It comes from pain.”

Quentin tries to convince Alice that Fillory is real. She is a disbeliever. Come on Alice! You just sent a killer Mothman back into a mirror. What can’t you believe?

Julia is brought into this gross place and introduced to the underground magic people. They put her in a meat locker with the other newbie. It definitely is a test. But that teacher (although cute) is cruel. I know! Let’s wake up the dead body in the freezer! A little chase around, some screams. Julia kills him again, has a chat with Pete via dead body, cooks the fat (Ewww!!), and figures out how to escape. Surprise! Newbie is Head Girl! Tattoos signify leveling up.

When Quentin goes to get wiped, the wiper is the lady paramedic – the one in cahoots with Dean Fogg. SHe mentions Fillory and covers for him. No expulsion!

Forgot to mention that Penny thinks he hears the voice of the Beast.

Turns out Dean Fogg didn’t die. I’m not sure how he managed that.

By the end, Quentin was more confident. I’m glad because that insecure twitching was bothering me. Alice’s too.

I’m interested enough to watch the 3rd episode. I think the premise really has something and the 3 best characters – Julia, Eliot, and Pete – make the watch worthwhile.
