Bryan Singer To Start Filming ‘20,000 Leagues Under The Sea’ This Fall
  |  @   |

A new 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was just one of those films that failed to take off. One reboot from Disney that was to be directed by David Fincher failed to secure the funding and could not agree on where to shoot the film. But Fox was also interested in reviving the project, and last May it gained X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer announced that 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea would be his next project.

Now we have a start time. According to a new report, Singer will begin shooting his adaptation of the Jules Verne novel this fall. More on the story after the jump.

Here’s what Singer had to say when he first announced the project back in May 2015, on his 50th birthday:

“It’s my 50th birthday (ouch), and I just put the finishing touches on the script for my next film. A story I’ve wanted to retell since childhood. I promise this will be an epic and emotional adventure for all ages! An adventure very dear to my heart. Not abandoning the X-Men universe. Very excited about X-Men: Apocalypse and beyond.”

If and when an X-Men sequel is announced, it’s not likely that Singer will direct considering that Fox will probably want to get a sequel in production as soon as possible. Plus it gives Singer a break in between X-Men projects and from doing the same thing over and over again.

Deadline was the first to announce when Singer would start shooting. The script was penned by Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney, based on a story by Singer and those writers. According to the report, there is a chance that the film could become a franchise over at Fox.

Here’s what Singer told the site:

“I’m incredibly excited to be working with my friends at Fox, with whom I’ve had such a long and fruitful relationship. Ever since I was a boy and first discovered the 1870 Jules Verne novel, I have dreamt of retelling this classic story. Without revealing too much, it contains not only the original characters of Captain Nemo, Ned Land, and Professor Aronnax, but also some new and original characters and Sci Fi plot twists culminating in a timeless adventure for all ages.”

It’s an exciting time for Singer who has had a couple of hits as of late, thanks in most part to the X-Men films that he has directed. Of course, it’s hard not to forget how Jack The Giant Slayer played out. So let’s hope that 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea can prove he can direct films that do not involve mutants. We’ll keep you posted when a release date is announced.
