‘Hannibal’ Creator Bryan Fuller Will Be New ‘Star Trek’ TV Series Showrunner
  |  @   |

Back in November news that Trekkies everywhere had longed to hear arrived: a brand new Star Trek TV series was officially on the way.

Now comes some news that should add to that excitement. Bryan Fuller, the creator and showrunner of the critically acclaimed but short-lived NBC drama Hannibal, will be the co-creator, showrunner, and an executive producer on the new Star Trek series.

Of the news, Fuller said:

“My very first experience of “˜Star Trek’ is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the “˜Star Trek’ universe lit my imagination on fire. It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of “˜Star Trek’ with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no “˜Star Trek’ series has gone before.”

Kurtzman also spoke on the news, saying:

“Bringing “˜Star Trek’ back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care. His encyclopedic knowledge of “˜Trek’ canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds.”

For those who are unfamiliar, Fuller actually started his career with Star Trek. He was a writer on episodes of both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, and also co-produced numerous episodes of Voyager.

CBS Television Studios president David Stapf added:

“For the past 50 years, “˜Star Trek’ has been a groundbreaking franchise that not only changed the landscape of television, but made a significant impact on pop culture. When we began discussions about the series returning to television, we immediately knew that Bryan Fuller would be the ideal person to work alongside Alex Kurtzman to create a fresh and authentic take on this classic and timeless series. Bryan is not only an extremely gifted writer, but a genuine fan of “˜Star Trek.’ Having someone at the helm with his gravitas who also understands and appreciates the significance of the franchise and the worldwide fan base was essential to us.”

The plan for the series, on the other hand, might not be so exciting for longtime fans here in the States. The strategy will be to create a series with new characters and civilizations that exist outside of the mythology established by previous series and movies, and to release it in the US exclusively on the CBS video on demand subscription service CBS All Access, which will cost you $5.99 a month. The first episode is set to air on CBS before all subsequent episodes debut on All Access.

The new Star Trek is scheduled to arrive in January of 2017, which makes Fuller a very busy man currently. He’s also the co-showrunner of the Starz series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, which is set to begin production in a couple of months.
