The Purge: Anarchy trailer image

Writer/director James DeMonaco“˜s The Purge films have been hyper-violent, exposing the politics of what a new America could be like if crime were legalized for one single day. It showed the glaring discrepancy between the rich, who could afford the luxuries of protection, and the poor, who must defend themselves with flimsy security, or offer their own lives as tribute killings to protect their own loved ones. The franchise has spanned two films, each being a respectable hit, and now Universal has released the first trailer for The Purge: Election Year.

Check it out below.

As the title implies, The Purge: Election Year will have to do with the idea of how politics tie into the idea of the film. The first two explored what it was like for the rich and the poor, respectively, struggling to stay alive during the event. Now the third takes a look at the very government that let the day of The Purge happen.

Frank Grillo reprises his role as Sergeant, who has now become the bodyguard of Charlene Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), a Presidential nominee who seeks to put an end to The Purge once she is elected into office. The two are kindred spirits of sorts, as they both share harrowing stories of surviving the bloody chaotic day. But the government officials oppose the idea of ending the blood-splattered 24-hour period, and put a plan into motion to have Roan assassinated.

As we have seen in the past, The Purge tends to bring out the crazies who feed on the fears, and relish in the act of killing the innocent. So you can expect a lot of wackos running around killing people, which is naturally amped up when they hear that someone has high profile as a Presidential nominee is out on the streets of Washington D.C.

The Purge: Election Year is set to open, rather appropriately, on July 1st, 2016.

Expanding the universe introduced in the hit franchise that electrified the culture and earned $200 million at the worldwide box office, Universal Pictures’ The Purge: Election Year reveals the next terrifying chapter that occurs over 12 hours of annual lawlessness sanctioned by the New Founders of America to keep this country great.

It’s been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night. Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn”¦or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.
