Starz has greenlit a sequel to their 2013 series The White Queen, which starred Rebecca Ferguson (Spectre) as the title royal in a story based on the historical fiction novel by Philippa Gregory, according to THR.
Titled The White Princess, the sequel television show will also be based on Gregory’s novel of the same name from her Cousins’ War series, which tells a fictionalized tale of England’s famous War Of The Roses era, but as told from the women’s perspectives.
Starz ordered an 8-episode limited series, which is reportedly currently in preproduction. No mention yet on casting.
Per THR, here’s what the new series will center on:
The story, which is set in 1845, follows the rise of the House of Tudor, and the rocky marriage between Princess Elizabeth of York and King Henry Tudor. When rumors arise that Elizabeth’s long-lost brother Prince Richard is alive and hoping to take back the throne, she must choose a side.
The royals referred to here would be King Henry VII and the “White Queen’s” daughter Princess Elizabeth of York, parents to the more famous Henry VIII.
The White Queen was a well-done series and a hit for the network, so it’s not surprising that they’ve decided to continue with more Gregory material. I’m a longtime fan of Gregory’s books, so if you want to catch up before the new series begins (no word yet on when that will be either), here’s the list of books below. Books 1, 2, and 4 are what The White Queen Season 1 were based on (the TV show is available now on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital).
