After ‘Deadpool’ Success, ‘Wolverine 3’ May Be Rated R

Hugh Jackman ad Wolverine In X-Men: Days Of Future Past

In many ways, Deadpool proved that a rated R comic book movie could work and be a huge success at the box office. But given that a rated R movie is generally targeted for adults (or anyone over 17), it would be hard to at least make the same amount of box office coin as let’s say The Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy. That’s not to say just because it’s a little watered down in terms of the language and violence it isn’t as good, but if you want to your film to be as successful, you have to make sure it appeals to the masses. So by making it PG-13, you are doing just that.

It’s easy to see why Guardians director James Gunn might be irate with some of the comments that have been made based on Deadpool‘s success, and it’s going to be no surprise at all to see studios try to copy the same formula. Seeing as the inevitable copying is close at hand, one has to wonder if Deadpool really is the exception to the rules.

But if you have watched James Mangold‘s uncut version of The Wolverine, then you have your answer. That film was better than its theatrical cut, according to fans. So based on Deadpool‘s success, it’s easy to see why Fox might be considering giving Wolverine 3 an R-rating. According to a new report, they are doing just that. Check out the full story below.

Comicbook.com was able to grab a photo of a pamphlet Fox supposedly handed out to guests at their Toy Fair presentation. An attendee then notice the rating they wanted to give Wolverine 3 and soon posted it up on social media. Here’s a look at it:

This is far from a confirmation that Wolverine 3 will be rated r. And judging by the projected release date, Fox will still have some time to figure out whether or not they will give it that rating.

But if that image is true, then Mangold will be allowed to portray Wolverine more accurately than he was previously depicted. Every X-Men film that Wolverine has been in has been rated PG-13. Fans did get a glimpse of a true Wolverine when he dropped the F-bomb in X-Men: First Class. However, he dropped a few more in The Wolverine. And should a rated R Wolverine 3 be successful at the box office, it will be worth the risk as Fox will most likely pursue the same rating for X-Force, a mutant strike force team performing black-ops missions. In fact, producer Simon Kinberg has said that he would like to see an X-Force film that is rated R.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Hugh Jackman has expressed an interest in giving fans an R-rated Wolverine movie. In fact, he talked about it at Comic-Con in 2013, where there was plenty of bloody footage that was shown.

To be clear, the image above does not confirm that Wolverine 3 will be rated R. Filming hasn’t even started yet, and any plot details are being kept under wraps. Although, there are some rumors that it could be based on the Old Man Logan storyline, which would need to be reworked since the story does use a significant amount of characters that Marvel Studios owns.
