Grammys 2016: Winners & Highlights: Tributes to David Bowie, Lemmy
  |  @   |

The Grammys took place on Sunday night, February 15, 2016, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, and was broadcast live on CBS on the east coast (the west coast had a tape delay).

Below are some of the highlights from the broadcast of the The 58th Annual Grammy Awards, along with the full list of Grammy winners at the end.

FYI, usually Olympus Athens does the major Grammys coverage, but she’s abandoned me tonight to work on other assignments, and since my house is filled with young adults who are basically having a Grammys party, I guess providing coverage is up to me this year. And full disclosure: I hate country music, I’m not into newer rap/hip hop artists that end up on major awards shows, and I pretty much can’t get into pop music while it’s popular. I typically shelve stuff like that until everyone else is sick of it, then I’ll listen to it. So, this rundown likely will not be so enthusiastic (I’m writing this as the live show airs), so if you’re a fan of this stuff, please keep that in mind. Also, if I’ve skipped anything you might have deemed a “highlight,” it’s likely because I was like “Who the hell is this?” There are supposedly to be several tributes to David Bowie, Glenn Frey of The Eagles, and Lemmy of Motorhead, all of whom passed away recently, so I’m looking forward to that.

Taylor Swift opened the show with the song “Out Of The Wood” off her 1989 album (I think) and I know about this album because of that “Shake It All” song being played on the TV at Planet Fitness. I initially wrote “Into The Woods,” but then I asked the kids, was that song called “Into The Woods?” and they said no, it’s Out Of, not Into. It sounds very 1980s Roxette, or something like that. Two seconds after her performance ended, she was already back at her front row seat, which is where they put her so they can point the camera at her during everyone else’s performances.

The Lionel Ritchie tribute was pretty cool. While I liked The Commodores, the group Ritchie fronted in the late 70s before he went solo, his solo stuff was hugely popular when I was in 6th grade and by that time I was already listening to AC/DC. Anyhow, enough years have passed where I can listen to “All Night Long” and get nostalgic, which is what happened tonight. John Legend kicked off the tribute with “Easy”; Demi Lovato did “Hello,” some country dude did “Penny Lover,” Meghan Trainor did “You Are,”” Tyreese did “Brick House,” and then Ritchie came up to join everyone on stage for “All Night Long.”

Then The Weeknd did a song, and the kids told me I had to mention that because “he’s awesome,” so there, mentioned. Btw, I’m not commenting on the Winners of each category, because I’m like “Who’s that?” for most of the nominees, and my favorite category, Best Metal Performance,” isn’t televised unfortunately.

Stevie Wonder led a lovely but short tribute to Maurice White of Earth, Wind, and Fire, who died earlier this month.

Now one of the tributes I was looking forward to was to Glenn Frey of The Eagles, who passed away last month. The surviving Eagles along with Jackson Browne did “Take It Easy,” the most popular Frey Eagles song. I loved hearing Browne sing this song he co-wrote with Frey, especially the opening lyrics (“Well I’m a runnin’ down the road tryin’ loosen my load…”).

A new trailer for Alice Through the Looking Glass aired — and is now online – that features a cover by Pink of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit.

In a first in Grammy history, the show took its cameras to Broadway in New York City, where Stephen Colbert introduced the song “Alexander Hamilton” from the Grammy-nominated show Hamilton. Not surprisingly, Hamilton won for Best Musical Theater Album.

Someone just came on and sang part of Michael Jackson’s “She Out Of My Life,” with a video of Jackson singing the song in the background. I was like “Who is this?” and the kids said Miguel. This performance apparently ties in with the upcoming reissue of Jackson’s Off The Wall album, as well as Spike Lee’s planned Off the Wall documentary.

Ok, the kids are clapping for Adele and are saying “I love this song!” and singing along, so here goes her mention: Adele performed “All I Ask,” which sounds just like “I Can’t Live.”

We’re all confused because there’s now a Gwen Stefani video on and we don’t know if this is some kind of commercial or what? This song is beyond generic.

Now Justin Bieber is sing an acoustic song and the kids are saying it’s about Selena Gomez, and that when he sings “Go love yourself,” he really means “Go fuck yourself.” Oh, the drama.

Here comes Sam Smith, looking a lot like Jude Law now, to give the best new artist award, a category with artists who are 100 percent off my radar. Meghan Trainor is the winner, so wait, I guess it’s 95% off my radar, because I know 2 songs of hers from TV ads during Christmastime. The kids are now complaining that Trainor has been around since 2014 (Google search confirms this), and so I don’t know what to tell them. It seems like this happens a lot (didn’t this happen with the Black Keys?).

Ok, now here we go: Lady Gaga does a tribute to the late, great David Bowie (who passed away last month) with snippets of “Space Oddity,” “Changes,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “Suffragette City,” “Rebel Rebel,” “Fashion,” “Let’s Dance,” and “Heroes,” all complete with costume changes and Gaga banging away on the piano. Very cool performance, especially with Nile Rodgers of Chic on guitar, but I only wish we got to hear more of each song. You can tell that Gaga really put her heart into this one, and gives an honorable tribute to Bowie.

Another tribute up: This is led by Gary Clark Jr., Chris Stapleton, and Bonnie Raitt for the late blues great B.B. King, who died last May.

The supergroup Hollywood Vampires, featuring Alice Coopers, actor Johnny Depp on guitar, GnR’s Duff McKagen and Matt Sorum, and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, hits the stage with an original tune called “As Bad As I Am,” before going into Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades,” which is a tribute to Lemmy, who passed away in December and former bandmate Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor Dies, who died in November.

Now here comes the official In Memoriam reel, so time to cry, even though this broadcast has felt like one big in memoriam to begin with. (Unfortunately, the music world saw a lot of loss over the past year.)

Finishing the awards off is Beyonce in her wedding dress giving out the Record Of The Year. And Bruno Mars wins with “Uptown Funk,” his only song.

Ending off the ceremony is a performance by Pitbull with Joe Perry, Robin Thicke, and Travis Barker. I’m kind of confused with singers who come out and don’t sing. Whatever. But here comes Sofia Vergara to dance along. It’s fine, just roll the credits right over this performance, that’s fine with me.

Although it wasn’t part of the broadcast, I have to mention who won the Best Metal Performance category — Ghost. Why oh why can’t this category be televised?!!!!

Here’s a list of the winners via EW (not the full list, because there was a ton that were not televised.)
