Emily Blunt In Talks To Be The Next Mary Poppins

It’s being reported that Emily Blunt has entered into negotiations to star in Disney’s sequel to Mary Poppins, taking on the title role played by Julie Andrews in the 1964 classic.

Though Blunt is in talks for the role, and is said to have always been the top choice to take on the iconic character, it’s not yet certain she’ll be able to take the job. The actress is currently expecting her second child, and there’s a chance that that could prevent her from being able to commit to the project.

The untitled Mary Poppins sequel is set to be directed by Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, Nine, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Into the Woods director Rob Marshall, with John DeLuca and Marc Platt producing. Blunt, Marshall, DeLuca, and Platt all worked together previously on Into the Woods.

Mary Poppins followed a magical nanny who takes on the job of caring for the children of uptight parents in 1910 London, taking them on fantastical adventures while attempting to improve their overall family life. The movie combined both live-action and animation, and was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, winning five of them including Best Actress for Andrews.

The sequel will take place 20 years after the original, in Depression-era London. It will also, like the original, be based on author P.L. Travers‘ series of Poppins children’s books. The 2013 film Saving Mr. Banks told the story of Walt Disney (played by Tom Hanks) trying to convince Travers (Emma Thompson) to allow him to make a movie based on her Mary Poppins stories.

In addition to Into the Woods, Blunt’s past credits include The Devil Wears Prada, Sunshine Cleaning, The Wolfman, Looper, Edge of Tomorrow, and most recently Sicario. She can next be seen in the Snow White and the Huntsman sequel The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
