First ‘Pete’s Dragon’ Poster Plays A Game Of Hide-And-Go-Seek

Say what you will about Disney reimagining their animated classics into live-action films, but the concept has been a box office smash for them. But Pete’s Dragon was one of those rare films to be hybrid of live-action and cel animation. It wasn’t as big of a hit with the masses, but it did gain a cult fan base, and soon it will be joining the live-animation reimaginings that came before it like Alice In Wonderland, Maleficent, and Cinderella.

Disney debuted very brief glimpses of the film during the D23 Expo in August of last year, and we haven’t heard much since then. Now, the studio has revealed the first motion poster for Pete’s Dragon. Check it out here below.

The studio released a rather simple plot for the upcoming film, which tells the tale of an orphan boy named Pete who has been living in the forest with his best friend Elliott, who just so happens to be a dragon.

Of course, the motion poster, which you can see below, isn’t going to spoil too much by revealing what Elliot looks like. From what we know, Pete’s Dragon won’t be a musical like its 1977 predecessor nor will Elliot be a cel-animated dragon. Instead, Disney is going the CGI route to create Elliot, which will probably resemble a softer and more gentle dragon than we are accustomed to seeing. The plot descriptions seem to indicate that the reimagining will carry on the spirit of the original.

The film is directed by David Lowery, who seems to be a bit of an out of left field choice for this family-friendly film considering that his previous directing efforts had more mature tones. His other directing credits include Ain’t Them Body Saints. He also worked as an editor on such films like Upstream Color and Listen Up Philip.

Starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence, and Robert Redford, Pete’s Dragon opens in theaters on August 12, 2016.

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales”¦until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon. Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” opens in U.S. theaters on August 12, 2016.
