It seems strange that we are getting a first look at Paul Feig‘s Ghostbusters starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. But we are. No matter how strange or weird the campaign strategy is, most of us have already expressed our thoughts on the idea that the film was being rebooted based on Ivan Reitman’s ’80s classic. And a trailer isn’t exactly going to change anyone’s opinion, although it could reinforce already established opinions.
Still, if you remain hopeful, then I suggest you check out the full trailer below and share your thoughts in the comments section.
During the development of the film, Feig confirmed that his female-led Ghostbusters would not be connected in any way to the Reitman’s original. Which may sound like a disappointment to some. However, I remain optimistic that it can be a hit. After all, it is being directed by Paul Feig, who has been known to make us laugh from time to time. The film reunites him with Bridesmaid co-stars Wiig and McCarthy, the latter of whom became a breakout comedy star. SNL‘s McKinnon and Jones also join, both providing their brands of humor to the film.
But what’s strange about the trailer is its opening sequence. Despite the film being separate from the first two Ghostbusters, they make a reference to those films. They even add the line “30 Years Ago, Four Scientists Saved New York,” which might suggest that there is a connection and that the threat has since ended. However, it picks itself up with the comedy by sliming Wiig.
While we are all familiar with what Wiig and McCarthy can do – both of whom seem to be the more serious of the group – I’m pretty excited to see what McKinnon and Jones can bring. Both are easily the best cast members of the current season of SNL.
The trailer also provides some background on who the new Ghostbusters are, albeit in very small doses.
Ghostbusters will hit theaters nationwide on July 15th 2016.
