It has seemed like a running joke for a while now, but one that everyone has hoped would become a real thing. When the Sony Pictures hacking scandal was unfolding it was revealed that they might be thinking about doing a crossover event movie in which the worlds of their rebooted Jump Street franchise sequel 23 Jump Street and the Men in Black franchise would become one.

The possible crossover has been whispered about as a real possibility since then, and now comes a new report that not only is it still in Sony’s plans, but they also have a director in their sights as well.

Variety reports that the 23 Jump Street and Men in Black crossover is still in the works, and that the studio is in early talks with James Bobin to direct. Bobin has previously directed episodes of Da Ali G Show, Flight of the Conchords, The Muppets, and Muppets Most Wanted. His latest film is the sequel to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, titled Alice Through the Looking Glass, which will be released on May 27th.

Sony didn’t comment on the report and the movie still hasn’t officially been greenlighted, but Variety says their plan is to get the movie into production as early as June.

The first two Jump Street movies were directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who will remain involved in the crossover movie as producers. The LEGO Movie directors were unable to return as directors because they’re busy working on the young Han Solo Star Wars spinoff movie for Disney. Also producing is Neil Moritz, Walter Parkes, and Laurie MacDonald.

Jump Street stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are expected to return as stars, and will both also be producers. Men in Black stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, on the other hand, are not expected to be involved. Sony will instead be casting new stars, with plans to reboot the franchise with new faces.
