With Spider-Man set to make his major MCU debut later this year in Captain America: Civil War, the Jon Watts-directed reboot only has Tom Holland playing the titular character with Marisa Tomei playing the wise Aunt May. However, it seems that with the reboot set for a release next year, the cast is expected to grow, and now it has just added a new member to that cast.
New reports say that actress and singer Zendaya will be joining Holland and Tomei. More on the story below.
Deadline reports Zendaya will be playing “Michelle.” Details on the character are limited, so we don’t know if she will be an ally, an enemy, or even if she will be playing a love interest to Peter Parker. Furthermore, it looks like she isn’t based on anyone in Spider-Man lore.
That being said, Zendaya was among the actresses who’ve quietly been testing for roles.
From what we do know, Spider-Man will be a young man who balances his high school life with heroism. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that Spider-Man will be 15-years-old. Feige has also said that the script, written by Vacation scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein will have the same tone as a John Hughes film.
Aside from those minor details, much of the plot of the film has been wrapped in secrecy.
As for Zendaya, she is best known for her role as Rocky Blue in the Disney Channel series Shake It Up, and K.C. Cooper in K.C. Undercover.
THR’s Borys Kit says that Sony has been striving to make the supporting cast of the Spider-Man reboot more diverse. Here’s his tweet:
Sources tell me that Marvel/Sony has been looking to go heavily non-white with the SPIDER-MAN supporting cast.
Last year, there were rumors that Sony was entertaining the idea of having Miles Morales play the titular hero. A minority playing the title role would have been a great step for diversity. But with Holland landing the role of the superhero, it looks like diversity will have to be relegated to supporting our hero. It’s highly unlikely that Zendaya will make an appearance in Captain America: Civil War. But with a couple of more months left before Civil War is released, there is still a chance to make room for her if there are reshoots.
The new untitled Spider-Man reboot opens July 7, 2017.

LOL, I think this trend of making a white version and a colored version of movies is over the top funny.
