Last week on Gotham, Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) got a clean bill of health from Dr. Strange (BD Wong), and was released. Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) thought Jim (Ben McKenzie) was onto him about the disappearance of Ms. Kringle. Bruce and Alfred (David Mazouz and Sean Pertwee) went on the hunt for Bruce’s parents’ killer, but when Alfred got laid up, Bruce continued alone. With some help from a Joker-y looking Lori Petty, Bruce found his man. He ended up unable to kill him, however, by the time Jim caught up to them, the killer-for-hire turned the gun on himself. Bruce went to live on the streets with Selina (Camren Bicondova)

Warning! Spoilers below.

Gotham 2.15 “Mad Grey Dawn” review: Bruce and Selina go to visit Ivy (Clare Foley), who is caring for her plants in her giant drug greenhouse. She slipped some magic mushrooms into her drug gang’s food so Bruce and Selina could rob them. But they got caught anyway by the leader, Butch’s nephew. Bruce gets brutally beat up. But they manage to hit their way out and escape with some money. Bruce is happy though. He feels like he learned a (future Batman) lesson.

Penguin visits Butch and Tabitha (Drew Powell and Jessica Lucas). I do like this little team-up. They can see he is off his rocker. Butch doesn’t want to kill him, but Tabitha wants some kind of feathery retribution. His next stop is Nygma’s. It made me happy to see him genuinely happy to see Penguin, a glimpse of how he used to be. Alas…

Nygma to Penguin: “To be honest, the new you is kinda freaking me out.” And he’s a crazy person.

Penguin meets his dad (guest star Paul Reubens) at his mother’s grave, who takes him home. He offers Penguin a family – complete with stepmother and siblings.

In the Gotham Museum of Art, Nygma sets off some gas in order to spray paint a few question marks, signature of The Riddler. There is no question of who he is anymore. Jim figures out part of it: “He’s trying to send a message.” Nygma then has them on a goose chase with clues. The next clues send them to the train station where a bomb is set off. Nygma is put in charge of forensics. He murders one of the GCPD.

Jim was led to the cop’s apartment. The Captain (Michael Chiklis) walks in and takes him down to the station. His heart is broken and so is ours.

The end of this episode encompasses a length of time. Jim is tried and convicted for 40 years in what seems like seconds. Harvey vows to find the real killer. Jim tells Lee to move on.

Barbara’s (Erin Richards) eyes open.

This was an extremely intense and pretty tragic episode all around. Jim is going to have a super hard time in jail being #1 cop and all, and won’t be able to help find who set him up. Nygma won’t be able to help but give himself away, probably sooner than later. I predict that Dr. Strange will revive Theo Galavan (James Frain), which will set Jim free. The Penguin stuff was kinda surreal. My husband and I think he must be dreaming all the family stuff, although still released from Arkham (otherwise the other characters would not have been talking about it). Because how could all that be real, unless they are all as looney as he is. The dream theory also makes sense to me as the way we see Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) again. I guess we will see.

Gotham airs Monday nights at 8:00pm ET on FOX.
