Last week on Bates Motel, Norman (Freddie Highmore) went completely off the reservation, imagining he was speaking to his dead father, and that Norma (Vera Farmiga) was the one who killed Emma’s mother. He confronted his mother, and she was scared of him, walking around with a knife. Romero (Nestor Carbonell) decided to marry Norma. Emma’s (Olivia Cooke) transplant was a success. Norma, with the help of Romero, carted Norman off to the fancy insane asylum.

Spoilers below.

Bates Motel 4.3 “Til Death Do You Part” review: Norman is locked up in an institution paid for by Sheriff Romero who is marrying Norma. At City Hall, Romero asks for one moment of intimacy, and as I said “wow that’s awkward,” Norma says “this is weird.” They go through with it and Norma’s reaction to his moving in is classic.

Emma is recovering from her transplant and Dylan (Max Thieriot) wants out of the drug business. I guess Emma’s dad’s talk hit home. He gets back to the farmhouse to fire Gunner and the jerk up and quits. Chick (Ryan Hurst) shows up having survived the beatdown from Caleb (Ryan Johnson), and kinda sorta apologizes for nearly getting them killed, before saying he’s looking for Caleb.

Norma and Alex enjoy a married dinner, drinking to be happy. “Sleep well Mrs. Romero”

Romero is packing boxes and finds one of his exes in his house, She was obviously poking around for something and he panics and gets his money out from beneath the broken bricks in the floor. Dylan comes home and finds out about Norma’s marriage to Romero and warns her of ulterior motives.

Norman is getting acquainted to his new home. His therapy session is very heated and he “doesn’t feel like talking.” He gets bothered by a patient at dinner (Julian). He is back in therapy with Dr. Edwards and he blames Norma for him being there despite loving her. She “asks too much”, and he tells Edwards that she does bad things and he takes the blame. Edwards seems positive with the second session, as Norman storms out. Norma shows up feeling guilty and desperate to see Norman. She convinces the doctors to give her a short meeting with Norman thinking it will help, but it backfires tremendously as Norman loudly proclaims his fear of her, convinced she’s responsible for the murders he committed. He refuses to forgive her for sending him there. Their encounter shakes her to the core. She returns home hysterical to the waiting arms of her new husband.

Norman freaks out after his mommy meeting and ends up in a locked cell awaiting Dr. Edwards. He targets Norma as insane and a killer as we end the episode.

It was a great episode that flew by, and no one died! The moments between “Normero” were fantastic. Again, I know she ends up dead as per the movie, but I’m really rooting for these crazy kids. I cannot stop speculating… will Romero end up a psychopath on his own? He kinda is with his penchant for killing. I love him though and don’t want him to be anything other than this violent hero. he most likely will end up dead.

Freddie Highmore once again made be completely believe he was Norman Bates, and that Norman is sympathetic. His genuine fear and anguish about what he thinks his mother did deserves high praise (and an Emmy).

Bates Motel airs Monday nights at 9:00pm ET on A&E.

  1. In episode 2, Norma was walking around with a pair of scissors, not a knife. Just sayin…
