Geek Peek: Introducing Wonder Woman and Her Fellow Amazons (Image)

So far Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice isn’t the film that fans hoped it would be, with opinions being mixed to negative. The film has been criticized for its sloppy editing and being overstuffed, but one of the glowing positives about it is Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). If anything, her role in the film only helped get us excited for the character’s solo film.

We already know that Warner Bros. is going to move forward with their plans for the DCEU regardless of what critics think of Dawn of Justice. But to help ease some people’s worries, the studio has released a new image from director Patty JenkinsWonder Woman movie featuring the title character and some of her fellow Amazons. Check it out below.

The image, which was revealed exclusively on Entertainment Weekly, shows Gadot sporting brand new armor, standing alongside her fellow Amazons Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, and Lisa Loven Kongsli. Here’s what we know about them. First, the Amazons reside on Themyscira, an island populated by immortal female warriors. Nielsen is Queen Hippolyta, mother to Diana (a.k.a. Wonder Woman) and leader of Themyscira. While Hippolyta wants to shelter Diana, General Antiope (Wright) is Diana’s aunt who prepares her for the world beyond Themyscira. Kongsli is Menalippe, Antiope’s lieutenant who also has a hand in raising the young superhero-to-be.

In order to capture the world of Themyscira, filming took place on the exotic islands off the coasts of Italy and southern China. And even though that world has heavy Greek influences, producer Charles Roven explains why those locations were selected:

“Themyscira is influenced by the Greek but it’s clearly more than that. It’s a place that has the “˜you’ve never been to’ kind of feel. But once you’re there you’re not so sure you really want to leave so fast.”

“‹

And since parts of the film will take place on an island inhabited by female warriors, Jenkins believes that their armor should be different from male ones. The costumes fit the part. This includes some of the classic comic book tropes like braces on their wrists and, yes, even the high heels. And Jenkins is willing to defend some of that criticism that will come with the idea of females fighting in high heels:

“To me, they shouldn’t be dressed in armor like men. It should be different. It should be authentic and real – and appealing to women.”
“It’s total wish-fulfillment. I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time – the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.”

The image is encouraging, to say the least. The costumes certainly look like their comic book counterparts, and while it may probably not be a greek isle, the location resembles something you might see from the comic books.

Wonder Woman will open on June 23, 2017.
