Photos recently surfaced from this past weekend’s New York City shoot for Marvel’s Doctor Strange, featuring scenes with stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mads Mikkelsen.
But once the film wrapped shooting in the city, its title star Benedict Cumberbatch and its director Scott Derrickson took some time to visit a local comic book shop, much to the delight of the shop’s workers and patrons.
The actor and director where more than happy to take pictures at JHU Comic Books in midtown Manhattan, NYC, where Derrickson and Cumberbatch — in full Sorcerer Supreme garb — and took photos with some interesting Doctor Strange comic book titles in their hands.
Check out the pics here below.
One particular photo sees the actor holding up Brian K. Vaughan’s Doctor Strange: The Oath trade. It remains to be seen if that title has any significance to the plot of the upcoming film. The story does revolve around Strange investigating his own murder.
In another photo, we see Derrickson holding up Don’t Pay The Ferryman, a title which sees Doctor Strange join forces with Fantastic Four’s Sue Storm and Reed Richards against a mystic being who has half of her soul trapped in torment. Again, it’s not clear if the film will use elements from that particular title, and if they did, they would probably have to rewrite some of the characters considering that Sue Storm and Reed Richards currently belong to FOX. Just because they are holding up those titles, doesn’t mean that is what Doctor Strange is about. Maybe they are just holding it up for photo reasons or maybe the film really is inspired by elements of those titles. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Cinematographer Ben Davis has described the film as not your typical Marvel movie, with audiences being taken to other dimensions. According to him, the film will have psychedelic [M.C.] Escher influences that will make the film be Marvel’s Fantasia.
Doctor Strange, which stars Mads Mikkelsen, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Michael Stuhlbarg, opens in standard and IMAX theaters on November 4, 2016.
“Doctor Strange” follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
“Doctor Strange” is the latest film in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase 3’s goal””over the course of four years and nine films””is to introduce audiences to new heroes and continue the adventures of fan favorites.
