Disney To Develop Live-Action Film About Snow White’s Sister Rose Red
  |  @   |

A couple of year’s back there were two dueling Snow White films released in the same year. While Mirror, Mirror was brighter in color and in tone, Snow White and The Huntsman was a bit more dark and gritty. The latter would eventually get a spinoff/prequel called The Huntsman: Winter’s War. But now it is time to get ready for yet another live-action Snow White film. But it won’t exactly be about Snow White or The Huntsman. According to new reports, Disney is now developing a film centered around her sister, Rose Red. More on the story below.

THR was the first to confirm the news about Rose Red. The studio has picked up Justin Merz‘s script which will be reworked by Evan Daugherty. While there have been many films centered on Snow White, very few mentioned her sister Rose Red. Disney’s 1937 animated film is completely unrelated to The Brothers Grimm tale Snow White and Rose Red. In the written fairy tale, Red is only accompanied by a bear (who is really a prince), and the antagonist is a very ungrateful dwarf.

According to the report, Merz’s script started out as a standalone feature. But Daugherty’s new take made the story closer to the animated classic, giving Rose a “companion piece” feel. So basically, the film will be from Red’s point of view, while still using elements like Snow White biting the poisoned apple that would put her into a deathly sleep. This will motivate Red, giving her a reason to join Grumpy and the fellow Dwarves on a journey to find the Evil Queen and break her curse.

Daugherty knows his way around the character of Snow White considering that he wrote Snow White and The Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth. He also wrote 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and has penned the screenplay for the Tomb Raider reboot which is attempting to court Daisy Ridley to play the title role. Tara Farney is executive producing. Merz’s credits include the 2014 animated adaptation of The Boxcar Children.

Tripp Vinson is also producing via his Vinson Films banner. This marks the third time that he is collaborating with Disney on a live-action reimagining of their animated classic. He is already working on Genies, the Disney live-action prequel to Aladdin, and Prince Charming, a film centered on the male hero of royalty that was seen in diverse ways in many Disney animated films.
