‘Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ Three-Hour Rated-R Cut May Get Theatrical Release
  |  @   |

It’s not easy to defend Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The vast majority of critics have panned the film and its box office numbers continue to drop at an alarming rate. Despite the fallout, Warner Bros. remains optimistic that the DC Extended Universe will be just as successful as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We know that we will get a three-hour rated-R Ultimate Edition Blu-ray in the very near future, and saw a small snippet of what was cut when a deleted scene was released by the studio.

However, it looks like we won’t have to wait very long to see that cut as there are reports that say the Ultimate Edition cut could appear in theaters as early as this summer. More on the story below.

Heroic Insider podcast (via ScreenCrush) believes that the strategy behind this is a response to BvS‘s disappointing box office numbers. Though the film took the top spot in its opening weekend with a record-breaking $166 million, their numbers have been dropping fast. It grossed $51 million in its second weekend, which is a 69% drop from its first. Though it was originally projected to have a strong hold at the box office, the film placed second with $23.3 million in its third week, another 54% drop, and was narrowly beaten by the new Melissa McCarthy-led comedy The Boss.

It was reported earlier last week that BvS would fall short of the projected $1 billion, and would most likely top out at $900 million.

The idea behind this is that the studio hopes the added footage would mean fans would come back to see the film. Of course, this is just a rumor for now. And if they plan to release it in the summer as rumored, they would have trouble finding a release date with the least amount of competition as the season is generally packed with one blockbuster after another. The falling numbers indicate that there are little to no repeat viewings, and if the studio does end up releasing the three-hour rated-R cut in theaters, and it ends up backfiring, it will only look worse for the actual release of the Ultimate Edition as it would hurt sales for Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital releases.

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice is out in theaters now.

  1. The movie was not fun in any way. I remember when Man Of Steel came out after Avengers, and I thought, ‘yeah, but is it gonna be Avengers good?’ It was not. DC dropped the ball when they let Nolan pigeon hole them into 3 movies that didn’t allow for a bigger universe.

Justice League will suck. People don’t like depressing heroes not named “Batman”. DC’s gritty dark formula sucks, the writing sucks, the directing sucks, the run time sucks, the movie executives suck, the people who liked this movie sucks, Nolan sucks because he ruined it for everyone, emo Superman sucked, the fact that Suicide Squad looks way better sucks, Snyder sucks, geeks suck, and the disjointed DC movie/TV universe sucks! Reeves must be rolling in his grave right now. If you read all of this, you don’t suck.
