Last week on Damien, I fell victim to one of the classic misdirections; the dream state episode. But it was really convincing! I mean we’re dealing with a show about the Antichrist and those manipulating him, so to me anything is fair game. Damien (Bradley James) tried committing suicide, but was saved at the last minute. His dream, fueled by drugs, alcohol, and carbon dioxide, saw Lyons (Scott Wilson) and Ann Rutledge (Barbara Hershey) in cahoots to manipulate him. They even pulled a trick involving his long lost “mother”. His friends Amani (Omid Abtahi) and Simone (Megalyn Echikunwoke) are also conspiring against him. Now awake, he’s weary of everyone and determined to find the truth about himself.

Spoilers below.

After a quick bout in the psych ward, Damien pursues Lyons and calls him out on being in bed with Rutledge. Before Lyons could calm him down, his wheelchair, stroke stricken wife suddenly starts talking, and guess who it’s about. She speaks to him of serpents and horned crowns and points him towards Lyons’ Black Church in the backyard, a dank shack filled with torture tools.

Detective Shay (James Meunier) just can’t let it go. He’s dealt with Damien after all the “coincidences” and “horrible accidents,” and knows there’s some unseen link. Of course, watching his ghostly swimming pool try to drown his son will kinda convince you there’s an evil that needs to be stopped. He begins digging around Damien’s past, to his college days where rumors have swirled that he was causing problems. Former roommate Charles Powell (Joe Doyle) doesn’t say much, but is obviously hiding something. Another friend tells Shay about how a secret club ritual backfired and left Powell covered in 3rd and 4th degree burns. The ritual was pushed by Damien. “Strange things always happen around him.”

Simone is met by Sister Greta (Robin Weigert). She believes the things Simone has seen, and tries to recruit her to help stop Damien if he is in fact the Antichrist. Meanwhile, Lyons is obviously flustered by Damien knowing the truth about his affiliation with Ann, and he consults with her about the location of the Megiddo daggers. Obviously, he is seeking a “get out of jail free” card there.

Before watching the episode, I looked up “Abattoir” and found it means “slaughterhouse” in French, and dates back to the 1820s (just a few decades removed from the French Revolution). The last ten minutes certainly clue you in to why the show is named after slaughterhouse. Between the Lyons cult sacrificing a goat (this show loves animal sacrifice); and then the brutal murder that takes place… let’s just say – appropriate title.

We are learning more about Damien. At first he was the good guy who might be the Antichrist. But this episode delved into some of the horrific things he’s done in his past, and ones that he is still capable of doing. The music is creepy, there are some legit scares, and I have no idea what’s going to happen next… which is one of the best compliments I can give a show.

Damien is on tonight at 10:00 pm on A&E after a new Bates Motel.
