‘The Orphanage’s Juan Antonio Bayona Is The New ‘Jurassic World 2’ Director

Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World was a huge summer hit. Its success was thanks in part to director Colin Trevorrow, who had helped resurrect and reboot the iconic franchise. However, Trevorrow confirmed that he wouldn’t return to direct a sequel. But not because there was creative disagreements or anything like that, but that he and producer Steven Spielberg had agreed he would do one film. His confirmation to direct Star Wars: Episode IX pretty much put an end to any hope that he would direct a Jurassic World 2. So that left the studio in a position to look for a new director.

And it seems as though they have found one. A new report says The Orphanage helmer Juan Antonio Bayona is now set to direct Jurassic World 2. More on the story below.

Bayona retweeted tweets from the film’s official Twitter account, Trevorrow, and producer Frank Marshall, who confirmed the news on their respective Twitter accounts earlier today:

It’s still not clear what the sequel will be about, but we do know that Trevorrow will reteam with his Safety Not Guaranteed writer Derek Connelly to pen the script. Jurassic World had revealed that Dr. Henry Wu (B.D. Wong) was working with an inside group to turn dinosaurs into military weapons. Of course, things didn’t go as planned, but Wu did survive the collapse of the revamped park.

J.A. Bayona is best known for The Orphanage, which was his directorial debut. He then followed that up with the tsunami drama The Impossible, and also directed two episodes of Penny Dreadful. His work can next be seen in the fantasy drama A Monster Calls starring Liam Neeson as a giant tree.

Jurassic World 2 is currently scheduled for release on June 22, 2018.
