Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for Jason Bourne, the fourth film involving the title character and the fifth in the franchise if you count The Bourne Legacy. The film marks the return of Matt Damon reprising the titular role with director Paul Greengrass also returning to the director’s chair.
Drawing inspiration from the computer hacking and Edward Snowden leaking highly sensitive government material to the world, the film centers on a hack against a highly secured U.S. government computer network that puts the world in unprecedented danger forcing former CIA agent is to come out of hiding after spending many years off the grid. Check out the full trailer below.
This is a bit of an odd marketing strategy. Our first look at the film came in the form of a very short Super Bowl commercial that showed snippets of a car chase and Damon knocking out one of his boxing opponents. But now that we have a full trailer, we have a better sense of the plot, which the studio intends to keep vague until they release more trailers and promotional material.
There was never a short supply of high-caliber talent in the Bourne films that Damon starred has starred in, and Jason Bourne is no different. Newcomers include Tommy Lee Jones, who plays the new CIA director; Vincent Cassel, who looks to be playing an assassin of sorts; Alicia Vikander, who looks like she is an assistant to Jones’ character; and Riz Ahmed in an unknown role. Julia Stiles will reprise former CIA employee Nicky Parsons.
It comes as no surprise that the franchise has not followed up The Bourne Legacy considering how it was critically panned and was a box office disappointment. But the reason why it took so long for Damon and Greengrass to come back for another film was because they were looking for the right story. We’ll just have to see how compelling a story they have written and if fans will come back after Bourne has been in cinematic hiding for the past eight years.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Matt Damon returns to his most iconic role in Jason Bourne. Paul Greengrass, the director of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, once again joins Damon for the next chapter of Universal Pictures’ Bourne franchise, which finds the CIA’s most lethal former operative drawn out of the shadows.
For Jason Bourne, Damon is joined by Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, and Tommy Lee Jones, while Julia Stiles reprises her role in the series. Frank Marshall again produces alongside Jeffrey Weiner for Captivate Entertainment, and Greengrass, Damon, Gregory Goodman and Ben Smith also produce. Based on characters created by Robert Ludlum, the film is written by Greengrass and Christopher Rouse.
In addition to the trailer, we also have some posters and images for your viewing pleasure.
Written by Greengrass and Christopher Rouse, Jason Bourne hits theaters on July 29, 2016.
