Robert Downey Jr. Says ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Is Still In The Pipeline

The game is afoot for the Sherlock Holmes film franchise. Shortly after Robert Downey Jr. starred as Iron Man in the titular film, the actor moved onto yet another title role in 2009 in Guy Ritchie‘s Sherlock Holmes, and then reprised the role once more in the 2011 sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Though the sequel wasn’t as much of a hit as its predecessor, both films were enough of a commercial success that Warner Bros wanted more. News regarding Sherlock Holmes 3 has been slow going, but with Downey Jr. currently on the press tour for Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, journalists will undoubtedly be asking the actor not only about the film he stars in, but others as well.
Find out what Downey Jr. had to saw about the untitled Sherlock Holmes 3 film here below.
In an interview with Shortlist, Downey Jr. spoke about the status of the Sherlock Holmes 3, saying that they were “talking about it right now” and that they were planning on doing some “preliminary stuff.”
But then the actor proposed a crazy idea on how they could get everyone together to get the film made:
“If we could shoot it on Skype, we could have the whole [movie] done in a week. When we’re making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook. [So] we’ll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I’m tired all the time, but I’m so excited about it.”
If that were really an option, I’m sure everyone would have done it. Of course, the key phrase to get out of that statement is that they will “attempt to make one this year.” We still don’t know much about the film outside the fact that they are doing the aforementioned “preliminary stuff.” Plus Ritchie is currently in the process of getting his King Arthur movie ready for its March 24, 2017, release. If that film is a hit, then WB would presumably want to keep the momentum going with a King Arthur sequel, which would even push the production of Sherlock Holmes 3 even further back. When last we heard, screenwriters Drew Pearce, Lionel Wigram, Kieran, and Michele Mulroney were writing out a script.
Then there is the timing of Downey Jr.’s schedule, which now includes Spider-Man: Homecoming and the two-part Avengers: Infinity War film. With everyone involved being so busy, it looks less likely that Sherlock Holmes 3 will get made any time soon.
We will keep you up to date should any new developments come up.
