Last week on The Last Man On Earth, the Miller brothers (Jason Sudeikis and Will Forte) had a prank war, the extent of which I’ve never seen. It was bad – poison oak, falling off cliffs, fake letters from dead moms, half beard, half hair, half “drapes.” I did not think they were going to come out of it. But they did and it was wonderful. Todd (Mel Rodriguez) was being pulled apart, but found he had more to give, especially to support Phil. Carol (Kristen Schaal) asked him to father a baby for her and Phil and he agreed.
Spoilers below.
The Last Man On Earth 2.16 “Falling Slowly” review: Best opening scene in the series to date – Mike and Phil singing “Falling Slowly” from Once, complete with candles, wine, and harmony. Awesomeness.
Carol talks to Phil about Todd fathering their baby. After initially being uncomfortable with it (I wonder why), Phil agrees, after a skillfully written, directed, and performed “angel vs devil” or another variation of a “two-face” scene, using his hair-challenged situation as a prop.
Mike feels a bit hurt that Phil didn’t ask him, and now Carol is going to divorce Tandy and marry Todd. Silliness ensues, but so do brotherly feelings. Right in the middle of the Todd-Carol wedding, Tandy shuts it down in favor of his real brother. Now Todd is upset and dancing it out.
Phil plans on being there for the sex and even gets them unitards for the event. Awkward! But thats the show. Mike almost walks out, but Tandy is sincere with his low confidence (my favorite shades of Tandy are the sincere ones). Then Carol starts with her weird sex talk, and they get really into it. That’s when Phil blurts, “I love you” for the first time.
There are 2 big surprises at the end of this episode – one had me grinning like a loon. The other was strange.
This was just such a great episode! I usually have mixed feelings about this show, not because of the quality, but because I get uncomfortable about Tandy’s missteps and personality flaws, but this one (even with some Tandy-ish parts) was so entertaining from beginning to end. Jason Sudeikis was the right fit for this cast. Todd is a good friend to Phil, but having the real family aspect to the show was a good call.
The Last Man On Earth airs Sunday nights at 9:30pm ET on FOX.
