The casting on the Starz TV series adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s novel American Gods is wrapping up. In addition to the many roles that have already been cast—including the main character Shadow Moon, who is set to be played byThe 100 star Ricky Whittle, and Mr. Wednesday, who will be played byDeadwood star Ian McShane—the characters Zorya Vechernyaya, Czernobog, Anubis, and The Jinn have also recently be cast.
The newly announced castings go as follows: Cloris Leachman (The Last Picture Show, Young Frankenstein) will play Zorya; Peter Stormare (Fargo, Armageddon) will play Czernobog; Chris Obi (Snow White and the Huntsman, Ghost in the Shell) plays Anubis; and Mousa Kraish (Superbad, Fast & Furious) plays The Jinn.
Here’s some descriptions of the characters from the press release:
Leachman plays Zorya Vechernyaya, the eldest of three sisters who watch over the constellations, guarding against horrors forgotten by modern man. Once accustomed to royal status, the sisters have learned to survive on far less in a country that has no memory of them.
Stormare plays Czernobog. A Slavic god of darkness and evil, Czernobog is reluctant to join the coming war, wary of Wednesday’s motivations.
Obi plays Anubis, the commanding ancient Egyptian god of the dead, gently guiding mortals through the judgment of their souls.
Kraish will play The Jinn, a mythical creature of the fire who understands a person’s deepest desires better than they do. He fears for his safety with the coming war, and considers fleeing America.
Also starring in American Gods is Emily Browning (Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Sucker Punch), who plays Laura Moon; Sean Harris (The Borgias, Prometheus) as Mad Sweeney; Yetide Badaki (Aquarius, Masters of Sex) playing Bilquis; Bruce Langley (Deadly Waters, Your Move), who will play Technical Boy; Crispin Glover (Back to the Future, Alice in Wonderland) as Mr. World; and Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom, The Black Donnellys) as Low Key Lyesmith.
Production of the 10-episode first season began last week.
