Last weekend, news surfaced that the conflict between Zack Snyder and Warner Bros over the creative vision of Justice League: Part One was having a ripple effect with those involved in the formation of the DCEU. Among those feeling its effects was James Wan, who was rumored to be “feeling tremendous amounts of trepidation” about directing Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa. Naturally, there was a wave of fear that the director would leave his post, which wouldn’t look good for the future of the DCEU now that Seth Grahame-Smith won’t be directingThe Flash any longer.
However, it appears the rumors of Wan’s possible departure may have been greatly exaggerated as Wan has responded to these rumors on social media.
Check out what he had to say below.
Wan, who had been named the director of Aquaman last year, took to Twitter to respond to the many reports that have been circulating on the Internet, and posted a simple image of himself on his cellphone while leaning against a wall with the image of DC Comics’ aquatic hero painted on it.
Some might say that these tweets aren’t exactly definitive of anything. Though he didn’t directly say it, the image pretty much speaks for itself. Though the film is still two years away from release, changing directors wouldn’t really have had a huge impact on the production. But it should be interesting to see how Wan deals with the huge visual effects that will be used in a tentpole film of this size. We’ve seen Wan able to deal with practical effects in The Conjuring, and Furious 7 was his first foray into a major franchise. Hopefully his experience on that film and its success would spill over onto Aquaman.
The DCEU isn’t exactly screaming confidence right now considering how BvS wasn’t much of a commercial success, and wasn’t a hit with critics. However, early reaction to Suicide Squad is positive, and Wonder Woman was one of the highlights of BvS that got fans excited for her solo film. Plus, Ben Affleck, who was also one of the more positive aspects of BvS, will be writing and directing the solo Batman flick, which is rumored to have a number of Batman villains, and could possibly be based on the Arkham Asylum games.
Amber Heard stars as Aquaman’s wife, Mera. David Leslie Johnson will be writing the film’s script.
Aquaman is currently slated for a July 27th, 2018 release. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date on any developments should they come in.
