Lebron James Will Star In ‘Space Jam 2’

It’s true. Long rumored Space Jam 2 is actually happening. In the first film, Michael Jordan teamed up with Bugs Bunny and his Looney Tunes friends to challenge aliens who stole the skills of other NBA professionals, in a game of basketball. Although not a commercial hit, the film has gained a cult following, even getting its own live-read which had NBA players of today and other comedians, playing themselves and Looney Tunes characters respectively.

But for this sequel to happen it would at least need to find a player who has the same star power as Michael Jordan did back then. Now the film has just locked Lebron James as its lead actor, with Justin Lin (Fast 6, Star Trek Beyond) set to direct.

More on the story below.

THR says Lin will be writing the script with Andrew Dodge and Alfredo Botell. The site adds he will produce via his Perfect Storm Entertainment, and sources say he will be thoroughly involved in the creative development of the project.

Given WAG’s history, they will most likely go with the same family-friendly angle we saw in the first Space Jam, which featured cameos like Bill Murray and Charles Barkley. It is still too early to tell what the film will be about. James himself hasn’t retired and isn’t considering retiring, yet. But it should be no surprise that WB would probably try to recreate the live-action animation hybrid we saw in Space Jam. If you are not familiar with Space Jam, the film followed a then retired Michael Jordan who followed in the footsteps of his father by taking up a career in baseball. Neither the game nor retirement suited the player well. Meanwhile, Bugs Bunny and his Looney Tunes friends encounter trouble when an height-challenged alien menace threatens to enslave them. So Bugs Bunny challenges their captors to a game of basketball, only to realize that they have stolen the skills and talents of the top NBA players to become the Monstars. This forces Bugs Bunny to recruit Jordan to his team to become the Tune Squad.

Unlike Jordan, who had no prior acting experience before starring in the first Space Jam, James starred in the Amy Schumer-written comedy Trainwreck, where he played himself and friend to Dr. Aaron Conners (Bill Hader). James was surprisingly funny and had some great chemistry with Hader. Hopefully, someone at WB took note of their chemistry and will make an effort to bring those two back together for this film. Also not surprising will be the cameos we will probably see. The first film had Bill Murray and Charles Barkley making an appearance.

This is a bit of an unexpected gig for Lin, who is better known for helming the Fast and Furious films and the upcoming Star Trek Beyond.

Space Jam earned $230.4 million worldwide.

  1. I’m gonna skip this one. I love the Looney Tunes but I hate Lebron.
