Last week on Gotham, Barbara (Erin Richards) showed up on Jim’s doorstep, claiming sanity. Jim (Ben McKenzie) ain’t buying it. He went after the assassin lady to find the name of the person who hired the hit on Bruce Wayne’s parents. Barbara showed up to help, and after faking betrayal, came through. The nickname of the person is “The Philosopher.” Jim still rejected her and she went running to Tabitha (Jessica Lucas). Bruce and Alfred (David Mazouz and Sean Pertwee) foundnd a Pinewood victim, whom Thomas Wayne tried to take care of after she was mutilated. She tried to help them, but was killed by Mr. Freeze (Nathan Darrow). Two big reveals in last week’s episode: Patient 44 is reanimated Theo Galavan (James Frain), and Dr. Strange (BD Wong) is the philosopher.

Warning! Spoilers below.

Gotham 2.19 “Azrael” review: Theo Galavan is super strong, extra crazy, and quick.

Jim goes to see Professor Strange about Karen Jennings. They dance around some accusations, but Jim can’t hold it in. He shows his hand and tells Dr. Strange he thinks he ran Pinewood. Strange plays mind games with Jim, with that voice that lulls the patients. Jim is no fool. He lies as well and says there’s a court order, making Strange show his “tell.”

Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) is playing games with the crazy people – talking to other people’s fake personalities. He sees Jim on the way out and they have a few words. Ed overhears the doctor and his assistant talking about Jim, and offers up the answer to the question he wasn’t asking – create the story for Galavan.

Dr Strange convinces Galavan that he is Azrael and Strange is Lord Dumas. Azrael is super scary. Dr. Strange sends Azrael to take care of his James Gordon problem. I guess he won’t be a secret for much longer.

Bruce wants to go after Strange. “You need to be better,” says Jim.

Barnes (Michael Chiklis) is reluctantly listening to Jim’s crazy theories, when Azrael stops by for an assassination. Bullock (Donal Logue) and the cops stop it for the moment. Bruce Wayne looks at caped Azrael like it is his future. Azrael looks and moves a lot like Batman.

Jim to Barnes: “There are times when breaking the law is the right thing to do.” I don’t have to tell you what Barnes thinks about that.

Azrael slices and dices the GCPD to get to Gordon. Barnes should have parlayed with him. Barnes’s fate hangs in the balance now.

Galavan is made on the TV. Everyone is interested in that – Tabitha, Penguin (who had been watching with his rotting stepmother’s corpse), and Alfred.

Nygma figures out how to go to the basement. I wouldn’t go there, Ed. You don’t see the monsters, but you can hear them.

This episode was as batty as an Arkham inmate, and moved so quick, it felt like I was watching for 10 minutes. Nygma was the standout this episode. I love when his quirkiness is not spewing evil but his awesome brains, and “Azrael” was full of that.

What I love about Gotham is that with the exception of the Wayne murders, everything moves so fast and is not dragged out at all. Galavan is resurrected, and in the next episode everyone knows about it. Jim is a wanted fugitive, but soon exonerated. I am looking forward to the oncoming explosion… or implosion. All the players are heading towards the center.

I also really enjoyed the Batman foreshadowing this episode.

Three more weeks until the finale!
