There’s A “Strong” Chance Marvel Studios Could Have An LGBT Character
  |  @   |

Disney-owned properties are no stranger to progression and diversity, and as such it can create a stir of controversy. Disney’s Zootopia wasn’t afraid to talk about idealized acceptance and has become a hit. However, there are still those who are upset at progressive changes like having a Black stormtrooper, a female lead the future of the Star Wars franchise, and a new Disney animated movie featuring the studio’s first Polynesian princess. But in a day and age where it isn’t enough just to talk about these issues, studios are finding that they can talk about them head on through their films.

While these risks can pay off, it certainly may not sit well with those with opposing ideals, not only here in the U.S. but other nations around the world as well. And now, one of the bigger questions is when we will see a LGBT character play a role in a franchise film. Well, The Russo Brothers have an answer to that. According to them, the chances of a LGBT character appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is strong.

More on the story below.

In an interview with Collider, the Russo Brothers talked about the importances of being progressive with their storytelling, and the chances of a LGBT character appearing in a MCU film. Here’s what Joe Russo told the site:

“I think the chances are strong. I mean, it’s incumbent upon us as storytellers who are making mass-appeal movies to make mass-appeal movies, and to diversify as much as possible. It’s sad in the way that Hollywood lags behind other industries so significantly, one because you think that it would be a progressive industry, and two it’s such a visible industry. So I think it’s important that on all fronts we keep pushing for diversification because then the storytelling becomes more interesting, more rich, and more truthful.”

As exciting as this may sound, and I am open to the idea of having a LGBT character, this may not sit well with opposing groups. Then there is the global impact, where most countries stay silent on the subject matter while countries like Russia deem the LGBT as unacceptable. However, despite that, the success of the Marvel movies allows the studios to take such risks. Here’s what Anthony Russo had to say:

“I think this is a philosophy of Marvel, in success, it becomes easier to take risks. There’s a lot of unconventional ideas in Civil War in terms of what people’s expectations of a superhero movie are, but I think we were able to do that because Winter Soldier worked and Marvel’s been working in general, so there’s more of a boldness in terms of what you can try and where you can go. So I think that’s very hopeful for all of us moving forward that bolder and bolder choices can be made.”

Given the worldwide success of the Marvel Studio films – Captain America: Civil War has already grossed 200.2 million outside of the U.S.- the studio has a certain responsibility to make controversial and risky changes. However, the whitewashing of Doctor Strange – Tilda Swinton plays a gender- and race-swapped version of The Ancient One – is a whole other issue. But one has to hope that Marvel will take a big risk, whether it be adding a LGBT character or have a character stick to their original ethnicity.

  1. It’s funny that everyone in Hollywood if leftist and votes overwhelmingly Democrat, but balks at putting minorities as leads and LGBT characters in films…
