Geek Peek: First ‘Power Rangers’ Image Shows Team In New Iron Man-Inspired Suits
  |  @   |

The Power Rangers have been a fixture of children’s television since the early 1990s. Now, the long-running TV series is about to get a movie revival that reimagines the first team with a new look for our heroes and villains. Of course, when you go from TV to film, you tend to ditch the low-budget suits and upgrade with a higher budget, one that befits a film. That’s what we are getting in the first image of the five rangers: singer Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Black Ranger Zack, newcomer Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott (Lemonade Mouth) as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and RJ Cyler (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) as Blue Ranger Billy.

Check out the first image of the team here below.

In an interview with EW, who also posted the image, director Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) spoke about the high-tech upgrade the suits were given, saying that the show was about “kids coming of age, about metamorphosis.” He added, “These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”

Given the fact that has received a higher budget, it’s now possible for the film to ditch the TV show’s use of spandex with zippers on the back and trade it in for something a bit shinier. But there is more to the suits then a chrome look. These suits are different from their TV counterparts, as they aren’t made by an all mighty power. Instead, they are an alien costume that grows on them. Although that change might not sit well with those who have been fans since the show’s American inception, production designer Andrew Menzies (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) admits they will be trying something new by appealing “to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”

The chrome look on these suits makes it look like as though it were inspired by the Iron Man armors. But this isn’t the only new look these characters are getting. Just a few weeks back, we got our first glimpse at Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa. Unlike the heroes, Rita’s look was a huge departure from her TV counterpart by losing the witch look with browns, light blues, and blacks, and trading them in for a more “modern and edgy re-imagining” with greens and something that looks like it came straight out of a BDSM shoot.

Power Rangers hits theaters March 24, 2017.
