Olivia Munn On Why She Chose To Play Psylocke Instead Of Being In ‘Deadpool’
  |  @   |

20th Century Fox’s X-Men film universe is their comic-book shared universe flagship. Two successful film franchises have come out of its success, with another one titled New Mutants, from director Josh Boone, to come. Since Deadpool‘s success at the box office, fans have expressed their interest in seeing more R-rated comic book film adaptations. Even star Ryan Reynolds wanted to see an R-rated version of the X-Force, which sees notable X-Men teammates like Deadpool, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Archangel, and Psylocke unite to take a more proactive stance against threats to mutant kind. Most of these characters will appear in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. And that brings us to Olivia Munn, who is now talking about how she turned down a role to be in Deadpool and ended up being in Apocalypse. More on the story below.

American Way Magazine (via io9) doesn’t provide specific quotes, but say that Munn told them that she was offered a role in Deadpool. She, as the site puts it, didn’t want to be “the girlfriend.” Not again. She wanted to fight. To make noise. To kick butt.

Munn admits she was worried that she wouldn’t be a part of the action and that there would be “too much talking.” During negotiations, Munn said it was important that Psylocke is able to have “the brute strength of her character.” In fact, the article says it was “a make-or-break thing.” Here’s what she told the magazine, “I thought Psylocke was always one of the most lethal characters, and I said, “˜Yes, as long as you’re not using her to be the eye candy. She has really powerful abilities.’ And they said, “˜Yes, that’s an important part.'”

While Psylocke’s wardrobe seems like it sexualizes the character, we’ve gotten to see how much she gets to kick ass through the trailers.

Directed by Bryan Singer, X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters on May 27, 2016.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

  1. “Since Deadpool‘s success at the box office, fans have expressed their interest in seeing more R-rated comic book film adaptations.”

As a life long fan of comic books, I’d argue that my enjoyment of Deadpool had nothing to do with the MPAA rating and more to do with an honest to goodness, faithful adaptation of the source material. Watching Deadpool was very much like being inside the comic book. They couldn’t have accomplished this for Deadpool with anything less than an R rating but I wouldn’t use that to argue an interest in seeing more R-rated comic book film adaptations. I’d rather argue for more honest and faithful comic book film adaptations across the board, regardless of MPAA labels. If these movies can stay true to character and be PG-13, then that’s OK. If it requires an R rating, then do it. Just don’t take a character like Lobo and adapt his film as G for all ages and think it’s OK, or create an Archie movie as an R rated film because Deadpool did well. Batman v Superman being re-released as an R rated film? I’m on the fence about this one. I think the theatrical release could have definitely been better but I still enjoyed most of it. That said, if BvS is being re-released in R with additional footage simply as a money grab, then I’m going to be severely disappointed. The extra R rated footage better add something to the story!
