Supernatural is winding down its 11th season, and it has been all about the darkness named Amara (Emily Swallow). God’s sister had been trapped for eons, until Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) mucked it up and let her out. They gambled with some bad beings, as usual, but Crowley and Lucifer and Rowena (Mark Sheppard, Mark Pellegrino, Ruth Connell) put together could not stop her. The brothers are trying to figure it out, but are still doing one-off cases in small town America – just another hunting day.

Spoilers for 11.20 “Don’t Call Me Shurley” below.

Supernatural 11.20 “Don’t Call Me Shurley” review: Metatron (Curtis Armstrong) is eating out of a dumpster, and screams, “I give up!” Then pops up in a bar. Who is in the booth? Chuck Shurley!! Carver Edlund! Metatron goes into a little tirade about how he hated the Supernatural books, “Way too much melodrama.” Chuck (Rob Benedict) knows things he should not know. He reveals his true identity to Metatron.

Are You There God? It’s Me, Metatron.

After all these years, since he snapped out of existence and disappeared, he is finally officially outed as God! I even heard the Hallelujah chorus in my living room. It’s about time!

The brothers Winchester caught a case in Hope Springs, Idaho. Some weird, inexplicable violence happening. A man took his own life, after he started talking about how life was meaningless. Nobody loved him. He killed himself and had black veins running up his arms. We have seen this before.

Line of the day: “Dude, quit ironing my shirts with beer.” Such a brother thing.

So what has God been up to? He traveled and started a cat pic blog. He started a new series of books – Revolution. “I don’t think it’s going anywhere.” For anyone that doesn’t know, the creator of Supernatural, Eric Kripke, also created Revolution, a dystopian tale of a world after electricity dies. I was a fan. Metatron has a lot of questions, understandably. Chuck said he was hiding in plain sight, and explained the amulet thingy. He turned it off.

Metatron: “Did you bring me here to destroy me?” Nah. He needs an editor. God wants him to edit his autobiography. He’s not a fan of it. He gives God some straight talk. There are two types of memoir – truth or fairy tale. Richards or Wilson? Chuck picks Richards. For the 1st time, I like Metatron.

Great title: Chapter 10: “Why I never answer prayers and you should be glad I don’t.”

Metatron asks the biggest question of all: “Why did you create life?”
God: “I was lonely. I was being. She was nothingness.”

He created worlds to show her. She went around destroying them. Now… he is going to let Amara destroy everything.

Metatron lets God have it. And God is cruel. He does not care. I liked Chuck a lot better. Metatron argues for humanity’s sake. I didn’t peg Metatron to be so persuasive. Chuck wants him to read the new version. And Chuck has some pipes!

The fog is rolling in. Amara gets a message to Dean. She is going to destroy it all and he (assume God) is not going to stop it. But not Dean. Sam inhales the fog. Dean will not leave him. He cannot be infected. Just when all hope is lost, The necklace starts glowing. God has heard them and answered their prayers. Then Chuck shows up.

“We should probably talk.”

This is the 8th episode that Chuck has appeared (he was briefly referenced in other episodes). Although fans all thought that Chuck was God in episode 5.22 “Swan Song” where he appears at the end in white and vanishes, the show had maintained up until now that he was at first a writer, then a prophet.

This was fantastic work, bringing God back after he’s been gone for so long, and using him to redeem Metatron, who singlehandedly helped God get off the bench. The episode tied in the monster du jour (which was really just Amara), to the Amara storyline, to the “Where is God” almost series storyline. Curtis Armstrong was great with his fervor and earnestness in trying to get through to a cocky God. Benedict was excellent too. He definitely had his all-powerful benevolent being game-face on.

Next week is going to be so good…

Supernatural airs Wednesday nights at 9:00pm ET on The CW.
