Sony Pictures has released the teaser trailer for Ron Howard‘s adaptation of Inferno starring Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones. The film is a follow-up to the 2006’s The Da Vinci Code and 2009’s Angels & Demons, and finds Hanks reprise the role of symbologist Robert Langdon who wakes up in an Italian hospital suffering from a severe case of amnesia and must regain his memories to stop a terrorist from releasing a virus inspired by Dante’s Inferno.
Check out the full teaser trailer here below.
It’s not as though Robert Langdon has not done this before, but the fact that he must regain his memories with the help of Dr. Sienna Brooks (Jones) does provide a nice twist. Together they must decode ancient riddles to stop Bertrand Zobrist (Ben Foster), a transhumanist scientist bent on solving the world’s overpopulation problem by unleashing a virus inspired by Dante Alighieri’s 14th-century work, Inferno.
This is a teaser in every sense of the word with only a minute and 23 seconds of footage being shown, if you don’t count the 10 seconds of the teaser that was already woven into the trailer – and when has that become a common practice? And why open with Foster’s character falling from what appears to be a top of a structure?
It remains to be seen if the interest in the adventures of Robert Langdon are strong. The Da Vinci Code grossed $758.2 million worldwide in 2006, while Angels and Demons fell significantly short of that when it grossed only $485 million. Inferno does have an eclectic supporting cast consisting of Omar Sy and Irrfan Khan.
Inferno drops into theaters October 28, 2016.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Academy Award® winner Ron Howard returns to direct the latest bestseller in Dan Brown’s (Da Vinci Code) billion-dollar Robert Langdon series, Inferno, which finds the famous symbologist (again played by Tom Hanks) on a trail of clues tied to the great Dante himself. When Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones), a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories. Together, they race across Europe and against the clock to foil a deadly global plot.
