Gael García Bernal Leads Jonás Cuarón’s ‘Zorro’ Reboot
  |  @   |

Gael García Bernal may not be the most familiar face, but he is signing on to a project that will hopefully make him more of a household name. New reports confirm that the actor will now play the swashbuckling hero Zorro from Jonás Cuarón, son of Gravity‘s Alfonso Cuarón, in the reboot simply titled Z.

More on the story below.

García Bernal has been attached to the project since 2012, when the project saw Zorro take place in a post-apocalyptic future. However, the idea never really seemed to take off, and when Cuarón climbed aboard earlier this year with his own script, there was a complete overhaul. But as confusing as it sounds, Deadline says that Z is set in the near future and will be reimagined for a new audience.

Here’s what producer Mark Amin had to say about the casting,

I have always loved Gael for this role. Zorro is a hero who is charming, witty and clever. Gael possesses all those characteristic and he’s able to deliver them with a modern spin to introduce the Zorro character to a new audience.

García Bernal is best known for his starring role in Y Tu Mamá También. He has also appeared Jon Stewart’s Rosewater, The Motorcycle Diaries, Babel, and Amores Perros. The actor recently won a Golden Globe for his performance in Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle.

Jonás Cuarón co-wrote the screenplay for Gravity with his father Alfonso Cuarón. He also directed the film’s spinoff short, Aningaaq. Cuarón made his directing debut on Year of the Nail, and has most recently come off directing Desierto, which stars García Bernal. Desierto won the Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) for Special Presentations at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. The film is expected to his American soil later this year.

No word yet on when Z is scheduled to be released, but it is expected to start shooting at Pinewood Dominican Republic studios this fall.
