Godzilla 2 will now have to find a brand new director as Gareth Edwards has left the project. Following the success of Godzilla, he signed on to direct both its sequel as well as A Star Wars Story: Rogue One. But now new reports confirm that Edwards will no longer be directing Godzilla 2, but the reason may be more surprising than you think. More on the story here below.
Deadline says that the split between Edwards and Legendary Pictures was “amicable,” and was agreed upon before the sequel’s date was set. Edwards has been sitting on a couple of other projects that he’s eager to pursue, and wanted to walk away from big-budget tentpoles. Considering how Edwards started out from humble beginnings with Monsters, then immediately jumped into blockbuster movies with Godzilla and followed that up with A Star Wars Story: Rogue One, it makes sense that he would want to do something on a much smaller scale rather than work on what would have been three consecutive big-budget tentpole movies.
Based on what Edwards had said in 2014, Godzilla 2 would feature Toho’s Godzilla universe including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. No word yet on if this will change. As we have seen before, headlining directors have walked away from big-name projects after signing on or being attached. Now, Legendary and Warner Bros. are left with finding a new director. It’s not clear who they are looking at right now, but we will be sure to give you the news when the announcement is made. It had been expected that after Edwards completed his work on Rogue One that he would jump right into production for Godzilla 2.
Max Borenstein wrote the current the script for Godzilla 2, which is scheduled for a March 22, 2019 release. It will be preceded by Kong: Skull Island (March 10, 2017 release), which then would lead up to the epic King of the Monsters match-up, Godzilla vs. Kong, which has been set for release on May 20, 2020. That bout was made possible when Legendary switched over Skull Island from Universal to Warner Bros. earlier last year.
